>need to buy new card after 7700 died
>don't want AMD again after all the bullshit they pulled and all the bad drivers
>970 looks good for the price and has fantastic performance

Why does /v/ hate the 970 so much?
>>
>>332351831
3.5 GB of decent RAM. There is a .5 GB partition of shitty, slow ram.

After you use up the 3.5 GB, the remaining shitty RAM will cause stuttering and slowdowns.

If you're certain the game your playing won't go above 3.5 GB, or you're able to prevent it, then the 970 is a good card. It's just retarded that only 3.5 of the advertised 4 GB is of practical use.
>>
>>332351831
/v/ hates everything that's popular; ignore the nerds and keep your own opinions Its a great card if you're playing at 1080p, affordable as fuck too. You can even get 144fps in a lot of games. Plus you get shadowplay and all that other Nvidia goodness.

I don't hate it, I just had bad experiences with Nvidia in the past and AMD is better for the price/performance at least here in the states. Geforce(?) b stock is actually probably the most competitive in terms of pricing but I don't know how I feel about used cards.

Also memes aside, amd has by far the better drivers. With Nvidia you have to get a new driver for EVERY single game release, it's really frustrating. I quite like the catalyst drivers lasting for 3-4 months and just getting the beta drivers for specific games, gtav/w3 were the most recent I can remember.
>>
get an r9 290x/390x.
>>
>>332351831
>Why does /v/ hate the 970 so much?
AMD shills and twisted facts.
970 is fucking fine for 1080p and 1440p gaming.

>>332352149
only older and some poorly written newer games can't properly access the last .5GB, and it's not in any way "shittier" RAM, just behind a slower bus.

There's been enough real-life benchmarks with games demonstrating that most games won't turn into weird slide-show when the 3.5GB limit is reached, like some seriously believe would happen.

>With Nvidia you have to get a new driver for EVERY single game release, it's really frustrating
...WHAT? No, you don't. I've gone whole years without upgrading my drivers, and things have sometimes worked BETTER with my old drivers! Up until last year, I was still packing v.314.22, which is quite old at this point.

It's the AMD that REQUIRES you to always upgrade your drivers, just to make latest titles even launch in worst-case scenarios. And while doing that, there's always a risk that you break something else simultaneously, something I've yet to experience with my 12 years of Nvidia cards.
>>
>>332352760
Hell, I have a 770 2GB and even with the memory over the recommended in GTA V I still get 60fps on high settings and no slowdowns. The VRAM thing is one huge meme
>>
>>332352983
this.
I'm still running GTX 560ti 1GB, and I can 1080p/60fps most games just fine, simply by turning down couple settings. I thought GTA5 and TW3 would finally MAKE me upgrade, but nope! They ran. fucking. fine.
>>
>>332351831
because they hate anything popular. according to the steam hardware survey the 970 is the most popular video card right now.

That's weird because you're literally explaining Nvidia's policy on drivers. Every game that releases runs like shit until Geforce releases a driver. pic related

nigga just get a 980

Guys, how's this for a budget emulation PC?

Jesus Christ, my fucking sides.
>>
>>332351831
Because AMD outperforms Nvidia at every price point until you get to the 980 Ti

It's a fine card for 1080p, you won't notice the RAM meme

that said, the fact NVIDIA got away with that shit is diabolical

This is my current budget PC. AMD sucks for emulating.

You are never going to reach the 3.5GB limit at 1080p or even 1440p. You only run into issues at 4k, but why would you use a 970 for 4k?
In any case, the fact that it took people nearly six months to find out they couldn't use all 4GB really shows how much of a meme 3.5 is.
>>
>>332358359
I still think they should have at least said something. To this day you won't find anything about the 3.5 limit on the boxes.

i had serious coil whine on both MSI cards i had, RMA'd both of them and just got asus strix and its been fine

That's because the VRAM reported by GTA V isn't accurate, retard

Trying to upgrade and money isn't a problem, my GTX570, while it works, has artifacts which sometimes freezes my shit. What GPU should I get? I don't also wanna bottleneck it.
>>
>>332362353
there's not a card on the market that can bottleneck a K series CPU.

get absolutely anything you can afford.

980ti or even Titan if you got the cash.
>>
>>332362353
If money isn't a problem then upgrade the whole system, faggot
Otherwise IT IS A PROBLEM and thus you should just update the card to a 970.
>>
>>332361851
Even a vram hog like gta 5 doesn't use anyhere near 4gb of vram. I have a 980 and can play gta at almost maxed out settings except for the obvious ones like 8x msaa and that shit. The most I've used is 3.1 gb. The my 980 has a pretty hefty overclock on it aswell so the 970 won't be able to come close to the settings I use which means it'll use less vram.

Even at 1440p I haven't encountered any game that uses over 4gb vram. I mostly run out of gpu power before I hit the vram limit anyway eg if I run bf4 at 4k with 150% scaling I'll run out of vram but the game will be unplayable anyway at like 20 fps.

Even skyrim with 4k textures and extra detail mods doesn't go over 4gb. Maybe nvidia have their own special compression techniques hence why their cards have less vram than their amd counterparts. I heard about something called Delta Colour Compression which nvidia use.

Im using a 970 right now and its fine running most of the games in high / ultra quality.
The only problem though as said by anons above is the 3.5 ram thing. Im running dual monitor setup and, If i ran two graphic intense applications on both monitors my frame rate instantly drops from 60 to 20.
>>
>>332351831
The whole .5GB of RAM being stuck behind a shitty bus thing, and the fact that AMD R9 380/390 outperforms it easily and is cheaper.
