I'm gonna go through all the Doom games for the first time.
Any tips or tricks? Which Doom game is the best?
>>
Just wait for the new one, the old ones are too dated
>>
>Tips
To defeat the enemies, shoot at them until they die.
>>
Don't bother, they're old and boring now.

if you haven't looked at this yet you probably should. Here's some hot tips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJcf0aOwmiA

The shotgun is the best weapon. No need for anything else.

White boxes with crosses on them are landmines, don't go near any of them

which one, normal one or SS?
>>
>>332352254
you'll get differing opinions, but I've always liked the normal over the SS.

Remember to use a source port instead of DOSBOX
>Ultimate Doom
The original 3 Episodes are fucking great, the best official maps imo. Thy Flesh Consumed wasn't in the original release and gets much harder.
>Doom II
It has new enemies and the Super Shotgun, but there are a lot of bullshit maps (MAP09, why).
>Final Doom
Basically two Doom II megawads sold as an official game. Harder maps, Plutonia more so than Evilution.
>Doom 64
Look for Doom 64 EX. It is a source port for PC. Dark as shit, but still very enjoyable.
>Doom 3
Has nothing to do with old Doom.

Heretic is the best doom game.

Strife is the best doom game.

I dont think I ever played that one, all I can remember is an old moba by that name and I assume you aren't talking about that.

>>332350567
I haven't aged much of the first but I really like the second. There is a lot of talk about which one has better map design and whether the super shotgun is broken but I like it nonetheless. IIRC, I'm on level 15 or 17 on the 2nd the last difficulty.

Post-apocalyptic sci-fi FPS/RPG, overshadowed by Quake, since it came out in the same year. Probably the best game made on the DOOM engine by a long, long way.
>>
>>332353023
>>332353075
Dont forget Hexen and Chex Quest
>>
>>332352254
Depends on the situation and enemies. SS is good for pinkies and above but wastes ammo and individual possessed soldiers.
>>
>>332353395

Hexen was the nuts, but suffered from some really obtuse level design.
>>
>>332353365
Oh shit, I'm interested. A large part of the reason I liked heretic was the more interesting weapons and enemies. Does strife do that compared to doom?

>>332353395
No one dares forget Chex Quest, the best licensed game ever. Hexen was great for a while but the levels got super vague on how to progress later on.
>>
>>332350567
Hexen

>Pick up ZDoom or GZDoom (Open-GL ZDoom)
>Get the internal WADs from the /vr/ general
>Run your chosen source port with the IWADS in it's folder
>Play Doom

Doom 1 has more focused level design compared to Doom 2, which has more enemies and an extra weapon, but less focused level design.
>>
>>332353535

Yeah. Strife's weapon / enemy mix was badass. Robotic and Organic enemies are vulnerable to different kinds of damage, you get alternate ammo types, stat boots, voiced characters (only the plot-relevant NPCs are voiced though, restrictions on hard disk space, this was 1996, remember), etc.

It possibly helped influence Deus Ex, although that's just speculation. Uses a lot of similar mechanics like multiple endings, different ways of finishing areas, open-world play, etc.

It had some really cool cutscenes, too.

Oh shit, I already even have strife in this doom engine pack I DL'd ages ago. I'm def gonna have to give this a go later tonight. Thanks for the recommendation.

Here's a little secret for you. Most of the Doom games themselves are actually kind of shit. The monsters are great, the weapons are awesome, but the levels range from fantastic to okay to complete garbage,

The best levels in the entire series are in the Doom Shareware Knee Deep in the Dead, but that game lacks all the extra monsters and weapons of Doom 2, which is half-mediocre half-complete-garbage from a level design standpoint. The rest of Ultimate Doom is also pretty lame, with the possible exception of a couple levels in Thy Flesh Consumed As far as Final Doom goes, TNT Evilution is typical TeamTNT dreck, which means it's even worse than Doom 2, but Plutonia is actually fantastic all the way through, just hard as balls.

Custom levelpacks and mods are what make this game worth playing. All you need is Doom 2 off of Steam and you're good. Play as much or as little of the original unmodded game as you want, nobody will judge you.
>>
Just download H-doom. That's all you need
