I played a couple hours of Fallout 4 yesterday at a friend's house, and I really liked it. I'm interested in buying a Fallout game, but should it be 4, or one of the earlier games in the series?

They're all worth playing at least once, though 1 and 2 are way different from the new ones so you might not like them. Fallout 4 is basically just an improved Fallout 3 in every single way, so you can pretty much skip 3 if you want. I definitely recommend New Vegas, the graphics are shit and the world is small but the RPG elements are waaaaaaaaaaay better than Fallout 4.

You can start with any game in the series as your first.
4 is barely a Fallout game and has very little in common with the earlier titles as far as mechanics and overall aesthetic is concerned. You're better off playing it first, if only because it's shit relative to New Vegas.

It's not even a RPG game but a first person shooter with rpg aspects. Anyone playing and liking Fallout 4 is going to be really disappointed when they find out COD: Nuclear Edition isn't a thing for every other Fallout game.
Fallout 4 is a decent game, I'd say buy it if you liked the taste of it. Don't bother with the older ones, Fo3 is outdated as fuck, and even though New Vegas is beloved on here it's really not worth having to sit through 60 hours of play and constant loading screens for.
Play the original games if you can first so you can get a better grasp of the story. They're a bit dated but fun nonetheless. 3 is optional, I found it fun but there was a lot Bethesda did wrong. Definitely play New Vegas, best writing in the series in my opinion and it's amazing what Obsidian was able to do in only a year and half.

Funny how New Vegas is a worse game but has far more content, far more substance, and the game world actually reflects your actions. You barely see that shit in Fallout 3 and none of it in Fallout 4.
As for loading screens, how fucking old are you? 'Oh no, I need to wait 5 seconds for something to load to do stuff.' Either take some fucking Ritalin or get better hardware so that the loading doesn't take long. I have close to 200 memory hungry mods running, and even with all that shit loading only takes 5 to 10 seconds long. It would be a fraction of that without any mods running.

Same here. In fact I found Fallout 1 and 2 boring, but I didn't play a lot of them. And got pissed at how mad it was to mod them.
If I were to rate the base vanilla games:
NV > 2 > 1 > 3 > Cancer > Syphilis > Syphilis with Cancer > 4
FO4 really wasn't good. Boring "shoot things up" quests, shitty graphics (2GB VRAM, lel), no choices and generally lazy dialog system. Also, where's the humor? Thing doesn't feel like Fallout at all. They just took a post-apocalyptic setting and slapped "Fallout" on it. But hey, you can sink 50 hours into "build your own settlement" - too bad it gets boring after 2 of those hours.
I liked FO3 and NV though. Dunno why so many people hate it.
