Also, if he had bound the entirety of the Lord Soul to the First Flame rather than split it between him and the other lords could he have ushered in a permanent age of fire?
He's a tragic hero, just not your hero. It was a war between dragons and giants.
He was selfish and was afraid of the humans becoming the next apex species, he couldn't accept the fact that like the dragons they slaughtered for no reason that the god's time were up.
He, and many others were misguided. The world itself, is pretty fucked too though. Basically, the only options in the end were to let it stay the way it was with the gray, unchanging state and dragons, or create a non-permanent state that constantly fucks everyone over.

He wasn't evil, he was just there. He thought it best for his people to sacrifice himself and kindle the flame, so thats what he did, and he was the first to do so. The MC rolls in and stomps his shit because he hollowed and was either attacking perceived threats to the flame or testing those that wished to kindle. Either way, he ended up part of the soul of cinder for obvious reasons. Not evil, just one of many to give themselves to the flame, for a litany of different reasons. Not that any of this shit matters. All 4 endings in DaS3 are 2deep, open ended bullshit. I understood it in DaS. In DaS2 it was bullshit, but we figured a third would wrap it all up. But no. Just like the fucking cycle, we're doomed to suffer more Vaati diarrhea turned gospel.

What is the point of wrapping the story up with a happy ending.
Even with the flame kindled, DaS world kind of doomed, too many undead around.

Closer would have been nice. Didn't have to be a happy ending. Just something that shows a definitive impact on the world. Demon Souls was fine, but that's probably because it was from a time where From hadn't found a cash cow to suck dry. They'd rather play it safe and leave an opening for when Bloodborne 2 bombs and they continue to deny the world of a new Armored Core. "We needa da munnee, activatuh da dock soes ploglam".

DS3 shows us that humans in souls series are a horrible creatures.
Sullivan and Aldritch are both humans who reached power greater than the power of gods yet they both are repulsive and horrifying creatures. Gwyn was right to fear humans and he was the only good who tried to do something about it while his firstborn was chilling out with dragons and his younger son getting his cock bitten out by an abyssal mass of darkness.

It's super shitty. The level of customization in the AC games is just so incredible. All the way down to adding weights to various parts of the mech to modify balance. There isn't much out there that could compete. But like you said, the fucking chinkarinos got tired of it, despite there being 50 different mech animes at any given time.
