Even tabletop railroads you into the storyline, even if the DM is very good and is subtle about it.
Otherwise you have shit like the party killing the main villain when they weren't supposed to and ending the game prematurely, or the one story where a necromancer floods a city with undead and kills everybody because the party was too busy getting drunk, fucking whores, and doing sidequests for dosh.
