Yeah, but mario bros. came out about 20-30 years prior to mario maker, and mario maker has changed stuff (eg goalposts to flags).

Shit doesn't work that way. You could say the same for every military commander who ever lived. In World War II the allies had ghost armies full of blow-up tanks that the Axis forces could have steamrolled through and won major victories - but they didn't know at the time. They didn't have the resources to know or do that. It's very easy in retrospect to say "Why didn't <x> do this?" but the whole point of a story is conveying the trials, tribulations and meanings of such conflict.
