I may get shit for this, but Marvel 3 overall is a better game than Marvel 2, despite still having a ton of flaws.
Simplifying and normalizing the controls, the idea of TAC (certainly not the execution, frankly they should've sticked with TvCs version), the roster for the most part.

I remember being so damn hyped for Marvel 3, I had been waiting for its inception for years. I was on the edge of my seat for reveals. Motherfuckers like Arthur and Hsien-ko were included and I was so happy.
But then the game got released and my fighting game friends all unanimously decided the game was trash. I didn't want it to be like this. I was in denial, insisting that it wasn't that bad. But eventually I too came to the realization that it didn't live up to the hype.

You're not wrong at all. People like to circle jerk the pros who circle jerk the "MvC2" days. MvC2 had game breaking crap and you'd see the same 3 characters everywhere. If MvC2 was released today, it would be completely despised by the community. The only reason it lasted as long as it did was because the era of streaming fighting games and uploading guides and shit were just beginning. The influx of information to figure this game out was just not there at the time.

They are both broken as shit, but Marvel 3 has more viable characters.
Marvel 2 has a cool strategic element to it though. Since some characters have great assists but are not good as point characters, you have to make a decision whether you want to weaken your team by including the good assist.
Also in Marvel 2 doing a DHC would put your character in the 3rd slot in the 2nd slot, which could really fuck up your strategy if the guy you switched in just died because usually the 3rd guy is your valuable assist and he'd get switched in. Marvel 3 could've used that, it would've fucked up teams with good anchors

Ultimate Mahvel 3 is one of my favorite fighting games of all time. Easily the best roster of any fighting game in existence since I grew up with a PSX/PS2. Getting to play as Dante is fucking awesome and I love their Marvel picks too, especially the more obscure ones like She-hulk and MODOK.
I'll pop it in every oncei n a while just to make sure my combos are on point. There's only one of my bros who even plays it with me, but when we start we usually go for hours and have around 50-100 matches in a single session.
Yeah the game's broken and high-level play is a bit repetitive, but unlike most of /v/ I never let tournament results ruin a game for me if I personally find it fun. I think it's pretty sad when people do that, and it's even more hilarious since I know most of /v/ doesn't even go to tournaments. It's just full of salty Twitch-Chat warriors.

UMvC3 has already shown a way wider array of playable, viable characters than MvC2 ever did. Where 2's character viability was condensed over time into about 7 or 8 total good characters, 3's has expanded over time as people have found new tech to deal with brainless garbage likes Vergil and Dark Phoenix.
The winner of the latest EVO didn't even have a Vergil or a Zero on his team.
So yes, it does make 3 better.

Only a few other franchises had 3 characters repping them, those being Darkstalkers, Street Fighter and Devil May Cry. And in the case of Street Fighter, virtually no one remembers that C. Viper is even in the fucking game.
