I don't think it has much to do with physical capabilities of women. Its more to do with dedication and time spent in the competitive game in question.
All top players of all competitive games worth a damn, spend a LOT of their time training. Therefore they have made the game a part of their lifestyle. Its more socially acceptable for a guy to do this than a girl.
For a girl to discover a game and have time to play it for the time necessary to get good, she'd have to have less of a social life. basically some random rich white girl is not going to find a copy of street fighter V on the floor and decide to start playing it when her whole life is already incompatible with hardcore gaming.
Out of the women that do take games seriously and play a lot, they're still a minority so that's why there arent many top female players. Top players are already a minority so its just statistics working. If 10% of gamers are girls maybe 10% of top players are girls, or something like that.

Okay, glad to gear GG is doing well. KI nationals had a fair showing and she got 9th. I can't really hold it against the player that the scene isn't active. Not saying she is good at other fighters, but there is more then 8 people who are really good at KI and she pulled 9th.
Not saying she is great, but I would call her good, at KI, and has done better then most other females in other fighting games.

It's because less women play fighting games, so when you have a tournament with huge 1500 player pools, even if 10% of the entrants are women which is being pretty generous, that's 150 women going up against 1350 men, with some even going up against each other.
If there was 50% women and 50% men attending tournaments then we'd see a lot more women in the upper brackets, but now simply because of the way that the numbers work it's incredibly unlikely that more of us are going to reach the higher tiers of tournaments.
Plus women in general aren't really as competitive as guys are just due to genetic and hormonal differences, sure I still play Street Fighter, but I'm also garbage at it, and I have no real interest to get better at it, whereas my older brother is amazing at fighting games in general and even though he doesn't play games any more he can still kick my ass at them.

barring the stupid question, I play video games as a boy and it has no bearing on the whether or not I can compete with another gender. There are girlfriends of strong players who are just as good if not better, and tons of female campaigners at both EVO and taiwan cups.

I had friends that were girls and while I loved a challenge and winning a close match and having even games they hated that type of pressure and stress and rather play games that were casual or at least had the same difficulty throughout. Only one I met loved the difficulty and purposely gimped them selves in most rpgs and loved playing fighters. I feel like its a personality thing since most girls hate the shit that comes with competitive vidya unless they "click" with it.

I play Dota2, I'm female, and statistically at least 8 of the other players in the game are men, and I consistently do well against the enemy team and most of the time carry my team since I only really play carry roles.
Why would I even care that physically I'm weaker than a guy and can't compete against them in sports? That's just basic biology.
