Yeah, it was a lot more impressive back then.
But I don't think it ever really felt small. They did a good job of spreading out the missions so you never had to go through the exact same route again and again.
It became familiar to you, but never boring.

Incredibly autistic. I joined the police department briefly, and this was just the joining process in a nutshell:
>Made application
>Reviewed by mod/admin accepted for teamspeak interview
>Teamspeak interview is some british 13 year old who's voice hasn't broken yet
>run with it
>Go through huge background check to make sure I wasn't on a seperate account/character
>Finally do an In character team speak interview and an in game interview to make sure I can roleplay
>Accepted into "the academy"
>this consists of 40 of us "recruits" getting yelled at through teamspeak by seasoned "officers"
>Have to write an essay
>Have to take a 100 question test about basic police procedure
>Have to learn 10 codes despite modern police departments speaking plain language

The best Roleplay was in the gang war aspect between making drugs, and fighting for territory. Fuck being a cop, paramedic, or any civil service job.

Here

Theres more videos with gangs of like 50 people each meeting on rooftops and killing eachother via permadeath.

V's map has too many hills (that are relatively empty) to disguise just how small the map is. I also think the Alamo Sea was a waste of space and could have had more desert or at least a couple more towns.

Welp, GTA6 is supposedly in development now, so we'll see what they come up with next.

>>332243385
>SA's map size and proportions, but shuffled
>IV's attention to detail, but refined to play a bigger role than just being goofy
>V's shooting mechanics with a side of IV's enemy AI and driving
Shit wouldn't be perfect, but that is already a simple formula that would work better as a game than anything they've put out so far.
>>
IV's map has too much grey (that's relatively cramped) to disguise just how boring the map is. I also think the water surrounding the city was a waste of space and it should have been closer to the mainland.

Welp, GTAVI is supposedly in development now, so we'll see how they manage to do even better than V, aka the best map they've done so far.

Not military, just got my EMT which scored me 3 extra points on the civil service test, few months later, got the call for the interview and eventually the academy. Military scores you 10 points on the test, so you'd have no problem getting hired.

Big cities are a lot easier to get hired in then small municipal communities. Also any fireman worth his salt would want to go to the big city, because the city=more fire.

Daggerfall is a huge world, but tbqh, it's literally 99% generated trees and desert, so it fails to stand scrutiny in any sense.

I don't have a problem with big maps, but these days it seems like many companies make large maps with no content in them to hide the fact that the game doesn't have a lot of content in the first place.

I miss when Square used to make overworlds. Overworlds were amazing at giving the player a sense of scale, and you didn't need to blow ludicrous amounts of money making every plain and forest to scale down to individual trees. Even if total area in that map is accurate, most of it will probably be dead geography.

Its a nicely detailed map

This is all V Had to do was have a slightly bigger scale and the same amount of detail which they fucked up majorly

>No missions outside of LS or Trevs trailer park in the country
>Rest of the map was wasted
>cars limited to 180km/h bikes and planes almost just as slow
What a retarded game
>>
>>332241778

That scale is slightly off. SA should be a bit bigger, as should Liberty City which is larger than Los Santos
>>
>>332240268
>3/4 of the game is retarded mountains
>Only one City
>Tiny useless desert
>No real landmarks outside of chilliad and LS
Yep its shit
>>
>>332250560

That's my main issue with V, it's a nice detailed world, but there's so much useless space, it feels to me like they made big for the sake of being big. There really needed to be a more significant town in the far northern area with more content and missions. I like V's map, but too much of it feels pointless.
>>
>>332239783
It's too big. Even Rockstar realized that so they made you do a bunch of missions in each area and giving you no reason to go back to the previous city.

San Andreas in general was the point where Rockstar started cramming as much stupid shit in the game instead of having focus, like that gang war minigame that gets thrown into the trash a few hours into the game. GTA IV literally has a mechanic that is introduced in a tutorial mission and NEVER used again.

>>
>>332240268

>>
>>332250983

I don't think it was too big, the only area that I think could have been altered a bit was the forest between LS and SF, but even then I still enjoy that section, just needs better road design. I think they did a good job of utilizing a lot of the area's map, you had distinct sections of the story for each area with only the forest being a bit underutilized. I think V is the game that was way too big, with way too much dead space, I think SA was in a good area of having enough, but not too much.
>>
>>332250884
Why is V the only GTA that gets shat on for having one city? SA was the only GTA to break from this. No one cared how shitty IV's map was, no one cared it was only one city.
>>
>>332246015
Jade Sea, Echovald Forest and the Desolation are still some of my favorite places in vidya
>>
>>332251462

I think the issue there was a lot of area outside the city that just felt like it was there to pad the map. You had some missions in shady sands, but beyond that a large section of the map is woefully underutilized. I don't think it needed another city, but it did need a much larger town and/or a town that actually had meaningful content and a part to play in the world.

What's the difference between driving around in a city and driving around in the desert? People keep saying the space is wasted but how does the gameplay actually differ in those areas

>cars limited to 180km/h bikes and planes almost just as slow

This was true for SA as well
>>
>>332252121
Also I don't know about you guys but I like to fuck around and do my own thing. Having actual space to do it in and a variety of environments makes it fun.
I feel like /v/ are "too old" to do that in GTA nowadays but you still retain the nostalgia of doing it in older GTA's. Leading you to thinking it's the game's fault.
>>
>>332252121

I don't remember the missions being anything significant for those properties. I did do some of the airfield missions for Trevor, but they got repetitive kind of quickly. That was one other thing that bothered me about V, they added in properties, but they were basically useless. They had no big side missions or quests, you really couldn't even make your investment back, what was the point to them? The Air base was pretty much unused unless you wanted to get a jet.

>>332252275

All I'm saying is to me it felt like there wasn't much purpose to a lot of the northern area, I hardly ever had any reason to be up there unless I just wanted to admire the scenery. Yes there was some content up there, but it seemed woefully unused for most of the game.
>>
>>332251174

Yeah it's the V map in Skylines as the filename says

>you really couldn't even make your investment back, what was the point to them? The Air base was pretty much unused unless you wanted to get a jet
Properties gave you repeatable missions and gave you money. You'd get gradual income and bonus money for completing missions.
Some gave you unique perks, such as the airbase. It allows you to store and buy planes. Same goes for the dock.
Buying autoshops gave you either a discount, or no cost when modding vehicles (I forget which)

>>
>>332252846

Yes I should have mentioned that the map does get used more in online, that is a valid point. Only problem is, at least on PC, hardly anyone does the missions that don't make money as quickly.

>>332252937

They gave you money, but for a lot of them you'd have to play a very long time to make a return on your investment. The golf club costed $150 million, it generates a weekly income of $264,500. According to the wiki it would take 568 weeks to turn a profit. It was a similar case with theaters and a lot of others, it takes forever to make your money back. I would have liked if they treated them like how Vice City have properties, with more proper missions, a story, and growth. In V you pretty much just buy the properties just to have them after you've beat the game and have lots of expendable income, they don't really serve much of a purpose in the overall game.
>>

Gang Wars itself isn't the problem, it's that CJ has to reclaim the territory by himself without any help from Woozie at that part of the game. It's pretty jarring since the Tirads helped CJ take down the Loco Syndicate and reclaim Madd Dogg's mansion in LS from drug dealers.

Arena's map size can't really be accurately measured. It just gets randomly generated as you walk away from cities and it's not possible to go from one city to another without fast traveling. I guess you could say Arena's map size is infinite.

>>
>>332266192
Well, why don't you look it up before forming a wrong opinion on the matter?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_(video_game)#Gameplay
>The world of the game is over 5,560 square miles (14,400 km2) in size, which is roughly the size of the U.S. state of Connecticut, and completely free to roam.

Daggerfall is known for it's fuckhuge 63,000 square miles of partially-randomly generated map, which was nearly impossible to travel by foot and needed fast travel.

A quick search brings up Nightfall as
>Guild Wars Nightfall (15,000 sq miles or 38,850 sq km)

That image is showing fuckhuge game maps. Just Cause 2 is accurately brought up because its huge, but it's not the biggest. It's not even impressively big in comparison to other contenders. The real question is why you didn't just look into the facts, which take about 2 to 5 seconds to check, before objecting to it.
>>
>>332265179
3, VC, and SA had awful car handling. I don't hold it against them because they're old and it was fine for it's time, but don't try and tell me any of them had "the best handling", that's absurd.

Basically, the Zelda cycle happened (Latest game is considered the worst, last game is considered the best)
>>
>>332266678
IIRC, the numbers are based off of released statements by the developers. Also, when it comes to e-peen waving, I doubt they factor "walkable space" much into their numbers, probably focused on what they actually had to design, build, and map.
