When I was younger, Metroid Prime scared me
>>
>>332236243
The beginning of The Suffering scared the shit out of me. The longer the game goes on, the less scary it got though
>>
The first time killing those dogs with the pickaxe in Penumbra is the only time I've really felt scared playing a videogame. The combat in that game was fantastic, if you mistime a swing you'll just fling the camera around and end up disoriented and not sure where the enemies are.
>>
The hotel in VTMB was pretty spooky. The crimson heads and dogs that jumped through the window in the hallway of the REmake on gamecube scared me too.
>>
>>332236243
Not LISA. Tryhard as it was it was a pretty weak game in the end.

>>
Ocarina of Time was pretty spooky to me when I first played it, it honestly made it difficult to move forward through the game. Now all the "moody" dungeon music is just dull and uninspiring compared to something like the soundtrack in LttP.

System Shock 2 and Thief genuinely made me feel uneasy.

The game was great, but the game was scariest at the beginning. Once youre running around with tons of weapons, explosives, and can turn into a Hulk wannabe the game loses its fear factor.

Resident evil 1~3 horrified me as a kid. I am still kind of spooked by them whenever I try to replay them.

I often have dreams of being in the game with the same outdated graphics. It always ends with me surrounded by zombies limping slowly towards me, until I hit the start button to go back to menu and quit the dream.
>>
>>332236243
I've played 3 different Silent Hill games and never finished a single one.

F.E.A.R.'s suspense in the first level spooked me for good. Excellent game.

Also System Shock 1 and 2 have some pretty spooky scenes. Anything with good, tense buildup is good, jump scares are not actually scary, they are shocking which is something completely different.

Genuinely? Not really.

I mean FEAR spooked me because I could even turn a fucking corner without expecting a jump scare. It was insanely stupid when they should have just used that fantastic combat dynamic and physic engine to do something else with it. FEAR was great whenever you didn't have to deal with that dumbass kid.

There's only 1 part in a video game that has made me NOPE the fuck out and have to stop playing for a bit. That was the FEAR Ladder. Condemned was unsettling and the Bear in Condemned 2 was pretty crazy, nothing has lived up to that ladder though. All the recent "scary" games have been garbage.
>>
>>332239603
I really like how FEAR cleanly divides the game between the scary and shooter segments so they never end up interfering with each other and both halves of the same whole get to stand out and be strong.

I guess it would be nice to see a full fledged shooter in FEAR's style but the horror sections probably do more good in breaking the monotony of shooting up dudes in generic alleys and buildings so that whenever the focus shifts back to that it's exciting again to be doing it and vice versa.

outlast is not scary at all though

it's got nothing on amnesia in terms of pure panic and spook factor

imo PT is still the undisputed king of spooky games. i just finished layers of fear and that game shows how easy the formula was to fuck up. what an atrocity

Demonophobia terrifies me. I couldn't even get past the second room so instead I watched a Let's Play of it. Also Five Nights at Freddies scared me to the point of me having vivid hallucinations of the animatronics for months on end. I couldn't even get past the second night. Other than that, the Jurassic Park game on the Sega Genesis scared me when I was a kid, and the first couple times I played through Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines the szlachta in the Warrens as well as the Werewolf terrified me and made me not want to continue playing. The Werewolf still terrifies me, even after five or six playthroughs.

Oregon Trail 2. This game was fucking eerie to me. The photorealistic looking people combined with the weird animation, plus images like this. There was another that was like "You've come across an abandoned wagon" and you have the choice whether to inspect it or ignore it. The game treated it as omnious, as if something bad could be in there.

And often, out of the blue, you'll be going along the trail when a harsh music note plays and something horrible happened, like your wagon tipped over or someone is sick.
>>
>>332237298
I can't get it to run right on my laptop, but I want to play it

>>
>>332236243

This is going to sound silly, but the Goosebumps game "Attack of the Mutant" horrified me as a kid. I watched a playthrough of it yesterday, and it STILL scares me. The graphics are just this really weird, surreal mix where its cartoony but feels sort of real at the same time. Its fucking creepy. I mean just look at this shit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQbL0gbWe_E

And look at what happens at 1:06. how that creature just stares at you down the hallway. gives me the creeps still

I haven't really had a game spook me in a long time. but at the time dead space's sound design was great, the scares themselves were pretty cheap but the buildup was really good. at some point I was having a panic attack in one of the bathrooms for like 10 minutes, refusing to go outside because there was scratching and clanging everywhere; all while aiming at the toilet because something jumped out of one before.

such a great game, shame what happened to the series.

I was playing Nether last night, a near-dead survival mmo in an abandoned city filled with weird teleporting monsters with a couple friends. I got separated and was taking a shortcut through the empty subway.
I had a gun with nine bullets, and as I was walking down this empty, dark tunnel, theres these footsteps and creaks and moans, and I cant pin down where they're coming from. I walking through it slowly to not alert any monsters and it takes like five minutes, just this fucking horrible ambient noises. I was telling my friends who were getting into the game adn they were just telling me to get out as soon as possible. I found a room with just a stroller in it and I have never been so fucking scared.
I got to the end and went up onto the subway platform area, and just saw a bunch of beds and skeletons. As I was sitting there looking at it I hear a horrible fucking screech and whirl around to see this twisted black thing with red spotlight eyes fucking flying at me. I unload the entire fucking mag into it and screamed loud as shit. My friends were laughing their ass off and I was trying to get a grip as I was shaking.
I have no i dea who made that fucking ambient sound but it was so fucking horiffic, just quiet shuffling and creaks and shit. I legitimately couldnt tell if it was just ambient noise or actual monsters.

Rayman 2 freaked me out to the point where I couldn't finish it. I stopped around the third zone, where the level had spiders all over the place.

Fuck this noise

The stalker games have scared the shit out of me many times. Whether it's being ambushed by wild dogs with no ammo or exploring the labs, nowhere is safe in that game.

When I was young the baby shegoths terrified me. I couldn't get past the first place they showed up due to my unexplained fear of them. I guess its for the best I beat the game years later. The adult shegoth would have killed younger me

Ecco The Dolphin's story is off the rails. I'd gone many, many years assuming it was just a happy romp through dolphin-land.

The fact that most levels are relatively simple and whimsical just makes the other bits that much worse.

yes, the zombie section of "Conkers Bad Fur Day" scared me a good amount when it came out, I was around 11. My mom bought it for me the day it came out, but I couldn't bring myself to get past the zombie level, so I stopped there. I ended up restarting it/beating it a few years later.

Also, Black and White 2 scared the shit out of me.

playing it at 3 am or so in a dark house, in the front room (didn't have my own computer back them) you see, back then, it was very rare for a child to have a computer in their room

But, if the name on your profile was one in their archive, it'd whisper your name ever 20 or so min. into the headset, super slow / quiety.

I'd turn around real fast thinking someone was playing a prank. 20 or so min. later, I heard it again. again I looked around, nobody there.

Why don't any games do that anymore, that was actually some spooky shit.

>>332270264
there crocodile counterpart in 2 is worse, fucking things can swim, jump and shoot lightning.

Something about this game didn't sit right with me. It wasn't the kind of scary where you shut off the console and still felt freightened, but playing it always made me uneasy.
I've heard some 3D games from those days had that effect on people though. Gex: Enter the Gecko made me feel like that once in awhile.
