Honestly it's because they killed their custom game scene. That's what kept wc3 alive for so long and they just refused to admit it.
They tried to monopolize the custom game scene so they didn't lose out on another dota.
As a result, the serious mappers worked on real games so they could continue to operate on their own.
It's not great, but the arcade is 10x than it was at launch. It's actually playable now, and a lot of good remakes are back

Campaign's gameplay is fun but the story is so fucking stupid and full of platholes that doesn't make any sense. Characters from the 3 games don't interact or have any interesting to say nor is there any consequences.
That they even managed to produce this piece of shit and think "yeah this is Starcraft alright" astounds me, there is no respect to the source material in any sort of way.
Multiplayer is basicly blizzard forcing their "meta" on others just like Riot is forcing their "meta" in league of casuals.
Blizzard wanted 100% control of custom games because they didn't want something like Dota 2 escape from them again. That it's easier to find a custom game in WC3 than SC2 should give you some warning signs.

It wasn't as big in sc1, but it was huge in wc3. The game was carried because of it. LIterally more people played dota / custom games than the actual game, proven by actual tournes.
When the custom map editor sucked so bd with so many restrcitions, it's no surprise the casual base didn't latch onto sc2. A lot of us never liked the hyper competitive scene anyways. Don't be a retard.

Probably the worst offenders are deathballs caused by unlimited unit select, and the lack of an advantage to expanding in sc2 compared to brood war. They fixed the later somewhat in LotV, but having 3 bases isn't economically better than 2 bases if you have the same amount of workers.
Early SC2 was all sorts of 2-base/3-base all ins because there was no reason to EVER have more than 3 active bases. It's the same right now in LotV but the bases just run out so quickly that you have to constantly expand.

Starcraft 1 was a more balanced, faster paced based game than WC3.
WC3, while slower with more burdensome mechanics, had a lot more custom map potential, and it's funny that you didn't mention Warcraft 3, because everyone else is. SC2 isn't just being compared to SC1, it's also being compared to WC3, another RTS made by literally the same people. It's not apples to oranges, it's apples to apples, even if they were strong for different reasons.
The custom game scene in WC3 was so strong that it literally invented the Genre Moba, so you can get right the fuck out of here with your contrarian ass. You won't be missed.

It was the map editor was bad, the custom game lobby didn't exist, and you could only see the "top played" (which remained the top played for 3 years due to the system) and you could only upload so much mb of file, you couldn't have x y z content due to copy right, i could go on.

no, it's when they spread their only true talent to thin. Metzen was the father of the Diablo universe, Diablo 2 was gold. He also worked on SC franchise at the same time.
They pulled him from that and made him work on WoW and WC3, when they took his team away from that to focus on more admin stuff rather than creating it went to shit.
By time he got back on the WoW train the game had already turned to shit, the players were cancer, and while Metzen was trying to do all this work other teams were screwing up good franchises.
