You know, to be totally fair, most of Smash 4's DLC is actually fully original.
The only returning veteran characters are Mewtwo, Lucas and Roy, and only two of reused assets somewhere (Lucas had data from Brawl, and for Roy they obviously used Marth as a base). Mewtwo wasn't in Brawl and wasn't based on anyone's design like Roy so they had to completely rebuilt him from scratch. So besides them, you have Bayonetta, Ryu, Cloud and Corrin, all fully unique and fleshed out newcomers.
Likewise with stages. The only ported over one is Pirate Ship. We got a bunch of returning 64 stages but it would appear Sakurai and his team had to rebuild them from scratch like Mewtwo due to Melee/64 being so old at this point (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=167699847&postcount=4156). So then we have Mario Maker, Suzuki Castle, Umbra Clock Tower, and Midgar (and miiverse but that was for free and also a clone of battlefield), all fully unique stages.

When looking at the N64 stages, there's a lot of subtle differences, like the barrel on Kongo Jungle using the sound effects from the barrels in SSE/Smash Run and the fact that Bronto Burts take Dedede's place in the background when somebody's playing as him on Dreamland.

No, I like Wolf but Mewtwo is definitely much more deserving out of the two. He's one of the most popular and iconic Pokemon (which is one of Nintendo's biggest franchises) and also has a fully unique moveset. Wolf is sort of a minor miniboss character in a series that's only had about like six games and is also only very recently coming back after like 10 years of hiatus. He's also a semi-clone, though he's much more unique than somebody like Falco.
