Chaos;Head was alright. the first half did a pretty good job of instilling a sense of dread and paranoia.
then they actually solve the mystery, and the answer turned out to be really stupid. and then fights with stupid toy swords happen.
Just finished the Muv Luv trilogy, long as fuck but holy hell that payoff was amazing. Definitely my favourite VN now.

The sequels, not so much. Turning the school and its curse into a thing that tons of people know about and introducing a bunch of characters that could traipse through the place with ease robbed the series of a lot of its horror.

I'm going to have to leave the thread for fear of spoilers but I was enjoying kara no shoujo as my first vn but the game kind of killed me with how it killed me. I walked into the nurses clinic and that one girl who started (or at least as far as I know started) that fucking egg cult got me caught up and killed by whoever the real killer was. It was frustrating because I knew shit was going to go bad as soon as I entered the room and saw her but the game took all control from me at that point and just made me watch the death scene even though every thing in me was screaming FUCKING RUN the moment I saw her.
I have a feeling I need to restart completely to avoid fucking myself over though.

What I don't get are those VNs that offer no change in route. The small element of control that most VNs give you by offering dialogue choices is what makes them enjoyable games.

Some writers only just want to tell a single story, and use the VN Medium to tell it.
IIRC, Clannad had different writers for each girl's route, and Stein;Gate only real difference in its routes is whether you get a bad end and which one. Fate/Stay Night might be the only one I can think of where the majority of it's three different routes were written buy one guy.
Personally, I like the linear ones as much as the ones with different routes. Planetarium is one of my favorites
