After the DaS1 greatsword nerf, it turned worse than a lot of the weapons.

Wildly subjective, but every weapon in Bloodborne is leagues ahead of the other games, both in design and movesets.
For wrecking in PvE though:

This weapon is a personal favorite of mine. Not a super optimal choice for PvE, but its by no means bad and I like the damage, stunlockability (especially with Stone Ring) and move set.
For PvP it is a beast with its biggest downside being that it doesn't have the best range, considering how slow it is. Not that its SLOW, but one should generally compensate for the other (unless it is a spear)

In terms of raw versatility in PvE (only thing that really matters since it's mainly a PvE game) the answer is always the longsword.
Good speed, nice wide swipes to deal with several enemies to easily hit slippery ones, solid damage, the stab attack is very useful in numerous ways.

The thing is, in fact, a beast for PvP, and as for PvE, doing the RB+RB thing puts you in a spot with very low stamina, so you can't take as much of an advantage of a long opening given to you from a boss, like you could from several swings of a greatsword.

I'd argue Str scaling doesn't really make much sense from a realistic standpoint (unless the weapon is ridiculously huge, like the dragon tooth) because swords were never that heavy. You'd be hard pressed to find a historical zweihander much more than 7 lbs.
