That's a reasonable conclusion to make when you're in the business of making 2D and 3D games, and your 3D games are failing to break out and sell the way the 2D games do. There's all sorts of questions you might have to ask yourself when this happens. Why does the audience prefer 2D gameplay? Have we failed in the way we approach 3D gameplay? He's taken his conclusions from this, and has been attempting to bridge the gap, to invite "NSMB players" to play 3D Mario.
And I hate it as much as you do. NSMB just isn't good. This goes to show once again, that the masses are stupid and incompetent, and that listening to what they want frequently will just degrade your product. But that's not what a businessman has to look at.
Miyamoto's completely right, 2D Mario succeeds where 3D Mario can't because it's so much more intuitive. Little children can play NSMB, adults and old people with no experience can play NSMB. I know exactly why Sunshine is MY favorite. It's because Banjo Kazooie is my favorite game of all time, and Sunshine basically controls just like it.
However, even stepping outside that mindset, I still believe that a well crafted world is FAR superior to the obstacle courses we've been getting for the past 8 years. In my opinion, looking up at a tower and thinking to yourself "Now, how am I going to get up there?" is far more fun and intriguing than to just run through the game on auto-pilot across sterile floating blocks devoid of any passion or intelligent design. Maybe if 3D world was more like pic related, it would have engaged me a bit more. But as it stands, I hate this NSMB-lite sterile schlock that we're been forcefed with 3DLand and World.
