Yeah the Hylden are not really much relevant in Defiance since the main antagonist is the Elder God.
You could say that the only "real" reason they're here is because they made up the race in BO2 and you are probably right, but I don't feel like it's that much of an issue, the Elder God is still the main antagonist of the game, I don't feel like they switched focus from him to the Hylden.
If something, it gave him a deep backstory in my opinion, since the main reason why the vampires and the Hylden fought was because the former were followers of the EG, and the reason why immortality was a curse was because they casted them away from the wheel of destiny, which made them mad and useless to the EG.
I think it fits nicely into the themes of the game, and defines better the EG: a parasite that only cares about getting souls through conflict, meaning that the main reason why he hates vampires is because they're immortal.
