Why do devs do this? why do they put a constant annoying sound when your life is real low into their games?!?

That shit was obnoxious. Then again, gen 5 had a terrible soundtrack anyway.
>>
>>332196375
Dynamic music in anything is pretty awesome. I still don't understand why they stopped doing this though.
It could get annoying sometimes, but just have it where you can disable it or something.

Classic Pokemon.

Game Freak are so inconsistent with everything.

The sound is there to taunt you, to remind you of your failure.

WOOP WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP
>>
>>332195851
I don't know about everyone, but it puts me on edge, reminds me to set priority on healing or finish the fight quickly. Good auditory tone use imo. Sometimes it's annoying, but in fast-paced games it's nice.
>>
This is how I would handle it, R8 it

>Low health alerts can be changed in options
>Can choose between continual siren, single chime, or no sound at all
>Also are options for visual notifications
>>
Avoidance stimulus reaction.
You're extra motivated to get your HP back up to remove the annoying beep.
>>
>>332196375
Star Fox did it better. One chime for low health, a second, different chime for critical health. You don't need any reminder beyond that.
>>
>>332197293
>gen 5 ost is bad
Nah gen 6 was weaker with mainly XY and ORAS remixes feeling underwhelming. Nice original ones though.
Really no Pokemon game has a bad OST.

Different/multiple options are always rated 10/10.
>>
>>332198746
Nah, gen 5's ost really is really bad apart from a couple of tracks. Gen 6 was kind of weak, but there was nothing offensively bad in there.

So you can get good.

What if you have a skill that procs on 40% HP but the low health is always in the lower 25%?

>Playing Kurt on Nightmare: The Song

I like how Axiom Verge did it, where the low hp beeps fit into the background music to make it more intense, instead of just being incessant and annoying.
>>
>>332199529
Ooh, that's great too.

>>
>>332198650
Why are devs so afraid of options in their games?

We are fucking lucky if we get to choose the "type" of controller layout we want, but rebinding them, no that is apparently for terrorists and pedos.
>>
>>332200740
They're not afraid, they're just told it's not worth doing options by publishers because it's potential wasted effort on content that customers won't see.
>>
>>332200740
Most just don't think of implementing them
>>
>>332200880
Not even talking exclusively about AAA games, even indies don't give a fuck.
>>
>>332197737
i was gonna disagree but it could be optional

i hated that it interrupted the music so much, gen 6 did it right
>>
>>332201036
Same concept, but since they're on a very limited budget, they don't necessarily have the luxury to cater to a tiny group's whims in their already tiny player base.
>>
>>332201210
>literally a line of code to translate jump from the X button to the O button

yeah nah
it's not like we're asking for a boss rush mode or some shit like that
>>
>>332199016
> don't want to look down at meters

How have you survived playing fighting games?
>>
>>332201210
What happened to passion?

Indie devs try to pass themselves off as being some sort of "noble crusaders of vidya" but in reality they are just EA/Activision without the money.
>>
>>332196375
This sounds good on paper but in practice all it means is it interrupts the battle music which sounds better
Gen 6 did it the best way with only 4 beeps, not interrupting the music but not being annoying about it
>>
>>332197026
I love it when games have dynamic music.

Not exactly when you're losing, but it normally plays when you're underleveled by a good amount.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0VkXB8p6g8

Dragon's Dogma is great for dynamic battle themes. Last Remnant is a close second to me.

I just dusted off my old Xbox.
I turned it on and Fable was in it.
I went to loaded saves and one file was called, "Potions or Food?"
My dumbass laughed, but I instantly remember when your health is low the Guildmaster would say, "Hero, your health is low. Do you have any potions.. or food?"

When done right, it really CAN add a lot of tension to a situation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YS3l261ikw0

On a side note, Halo Reach had a really memorable epilogue segment that just pit you against wave after wave of Covenant in the middle of nowhere surrounded by a bunch of dead spartans, and the more damage you took, the more your visor broke and HUD elements disappeared. It was a really damn cool sequence for how much they worked at making it seem like a "hopeless last stand" scenario.
>>
>>332202398
SMASH THEM FROM THE SIDE!
>>
>>332196375
It's good for normal battles because it's just a danger remix of that theme, but it's fucking awful and jarring in anything else.
>>
Incentive to get good.
>>
>>332202398
Fuck, I remember playing the shit out of it, but then I didn't wanna miss anything.
Upon reading it, they said you can miss everything in the game easily.
I also read you need a fucking guide to do anything in the entire game.
I was so deterred from using a guide an entire game that I quit.
I don't even remember anything about The Last Remnant anymore.
>>
Did this turn into a dynamic music thread?

I always loved how every heist music in Payday 2 was structured to fit the phases of the heist.

There was the ambient stealth track, followed by the "prepare for cops" phase. The music would start building up as a queue that an assault was preparing then it would drop as they start swarming.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P_qvg3wL5o

I'm not even a fan of the type of music but it was done so well I don't even care.
A shame what the game ended up becoming.
>>
I only just recently noticed that Mario 64 had instrument changes based on where you were in the level.

Like Jolly roger bay the strings would only start when you jumped in the water and the drums came in when you got to the cave area.

Hazy maze cave had it too but that's all I can remember.
>>
To me only The Last Remnant did this right.
It's a music that start when you're in bad position, it's a great music by itself, and sounds punchy enough to motivate you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aDJnaA6n0M
>>
>>332200535
That's actually really good. Hope they add more variations for the low hp themes in their future games.
>>
>>332195851
God kingdom Hearts is the worst offender too. The beep is so very fast and loud, it is honestly a shitty fucking mechanic no matter how you look at it in any game. Visuals or intensity in music is fine but shit like in pokemon is why people play with the sound off.

Several SE RPGs do something like this. Type-0 switches between half a dozen tunes depending on whether you're attacking, getting ambushed, the type of enemies you're fighting etc. FFXV also seems to have multiple battle themes, with multiple remixes for each to match the setting/situation.
