I-it makes the game more hardcore!
Fucking casuals.
Now I'm going to beat this hour long platformer built on trial and error to prove how games were better when most of the time you spent on them was replaying the game.
>>
I'd actually miss it, but depends how it's implemented

being able to settle into some kind of perfect setup that never needs to be replaced tends to make things boring after a while, while having to constantly work toward replacements keeps things interesting

if it's just a minor annoyance where you can infinitely repair when you reach town, it doesn't really add much on its own, but can be used as money-sink on really strong equipments, potentially adding extra choices like using them only when it's worth it

>>332198642
So, as I was bitching, you need the debuffs for every hard boss. That's exactly what I was bitching about.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I mean that either debuffs are weak and useless, or so good that you need them in every encounter that matters. That makes them badly designed IMO.
>>
>>332196914
Stealth is good if it's a stealth based game with the gameplay revolving around stealth. It's pants on head retarded when it's a game that requires literally no stealth but you can't be detected on one mission because "muh stealth misssion"
>>
>>332198050
>I don't even remember a game with good debuff design.

In Final Fantasy 9, most bosses were weak to one particular status ailment that you could uncover using Scan, and that often made the fights a lot easier.

Any game where the random battle enemies aren't killable in a single hit suddenly gives some utility to debuffs.

Oh and of course SRPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics where the enemy units more closely correspond to your own.

Breaking equipment adds an element of strategy.

You don't want to use your best sword on regular grunts because it'll break when you need it for tough guys later. You also have to decide if the enemy is worth taking out your best stuff to fight.

Without it you just breeze through the game with your best equipment all the time, no thought involved.
>>
>>332198968
>so good that you need them in every encounter that matters
And why is that bad?
>>
>>332194861
While it is pretty retarded for single player only games, it does have a purpose in online games as a gold/currency sink. I used to absolutely hate the system myself, but then realized prices would be ridiculously inflated if not for it since it's basically just a buy once and forget mindset.
>>
>>332199435
Because then the class with the debuffs is mandatory and dubuffing just a chore that you must do at the start of the combat and every few time/turns.

Not fun, deep or interesting.
>>
>>332199151
This, so much this.

Creating a puddle on the ground, then throwing a lightning bolt at it and turning it into steam with a huge ass fireball, effectively creating a lightning cloud of stuns and death is the best thing ever.

And that's only one debuff/status effect combination of many.
>>
>>332198968
Persona/Atlus games debuffs are what you want. Useful enough to keep as a move and use on mid/bosses, and even useful in many normal fights, but totally doable without if you don't want to use a buff-oriented character or delete them for better attacks.

Still they suck, especially since they sometimes stop and do a really obvious looking around animation. If you think you get tailed you should do something proper.

Only time they are somewhat cool is when the guy suddenly goes running full speed and you have to chase him.

Fuck you Ragnarok and the Homunculus system.

Out of everything on this thread, unskippable cutscenes before difficult scenes are the worst. I feel like escort missions where the escorted character's move speed doesn't match yours deserves a honorable mention, too. Bonus points for the AI getting stuck, attacking enemies even though ti's weak, or being timed based.

Actually that reply goes to most people in this thread.
>waaaa why can't I just mash a button every minute and have the game play itself

>>332212131
yes that sucks. Like with fire emblem. Even worse is that games like that use seeds to prevent you from savescumming.

So if you do that because you know people try to game the system why dont you actually just have fixed stats or allow people to allocate stats themselves. Like instead of 20% to get 1strength just give 1 strength every 5 levels.

Also fireemblem having crits being like 3x normal damage. Double is okay but 3x feels like they just wanted to make sure you can accidently lose your soldier even though he is perfectly healthy

I'll play what I want. I didnt step into Xenogears not expecting stats, I just dont pretend its good gameplay. Its something I just put up with.

The worst offenders are action games with stats forced into them for no reason.

Aside from that, most RPGS would be a hundred times better if they just went full skill-based action like Ys and stopped pretending to be PnP.

Risk and reward is doing a really hard mission or fighting a real difficult enemy, if you beat it you get reward, but to beat it you shouldn't rely on percentages or chance, if you poison your weapon you should do guaranteed poison damage, not a shitty 20% proc of dealing x5 times your damage in poison.

QTEs in moderation can be fine in some games I feel. Using them to transition between settings or boss phases in an action can work well I feel.

Yakuza does a bit more than just that, but in my opinion that series is about as close as you can get to heavy use of QTEs being fine without it being absolutely obnoxious I feel (and even then there are times where they could tone it down a bit)

anyway, what I said is still true. Even if you think videogames are superficial and waste time, the games that are called "RPG" excel at it more than any other.

Shit like Dragon Age and mainline Final Fantasies (where they became far more character focused as opposed to unit focused) can be greatly improved by removing stats and focusing more on player skill. In all honestly stats these days end up just being a cheap tactic to extend gameplay and not design proper challenges.Souls series does manage to avoid this though.
