Graphics were a large point long before Crysis. Look at the graphics arguing about which looked better, HL2, FC, or Doom 3. Or even comparisons between the Atari, Intellivision, and other systems at that time. Or that ad describing how they made the graphics in Donkey Kong Country. Pretty sure vram loads more than textures but while it isn't as important as some people think, not having enough vram can cause stuttering. Maybe more weird stuff too if the game can't stream the textures in time.
