https://andyrossagency.wordpress.com/2010/08/02/the-first-book-ever-written/

>The definition of “book” has become more flexible in the last few years. It used to be that a “book” was defined as a collection of printed sheets of bound paper, encased between two covers. But with the advent of the e-book, the definition is changing almost daily. One would have to conclude that a story written and read on clay tablets is no less a book than one on an iPad.

Why waste money on a court when you can have it built for free upon taking a city? Also the population determines how long the rebellion will last so you'll be waiting a few turns which could lead to rebel units spawning if your unhappiness is high enough. Plus it also adds +5 food and production for internal trade routes.

Publicly educated burger here.

The public system is trash since it's based on integration. Intelligent students from middle and lower-middle class families are mixed in with violent and "poor-performance" students to keep every school performing at the level, all to meet some arbitrary standards. Only the upper and upper-middle class families can afford to exempt their children from this system and send them to decent schools.

It's completely sick. Genuinely bright and innocent children are bused to the ghetto to be sacrificed at the altar of equality.

secret libraries aren't as secret as you'd think
the hardest documents to get your hands on are the preserved personal correspondence of the various popes and governmental reports documenting various political actions by the papal states

scientific documents have long since been made semi-public with limitations in place mostly to ensure said documents are preserved because many of them tend to be old and fragile.

But like always the truth is significantly less spectacular than fiction.

The church commissioned Galileo's book on the heliocentric theory. He wasnt put on trial for heretical thinking it was because he wrote the book as a conversation between a pro and anti person and named the anti person basically "Pope Dumbass I."

Galileo found evidence for Copernicus observations in form of Jupiter having satellites(which meant that geocentrism which premise was based on the assumption that earth is special is wrong).

Even before him there was Kepler who's observation led him to draw elliptical orbits.

disabled people aren't really 'expensive', people who genuinely are too disabled to work are few and far between. the proportion of government spending that goes toward maintaining those people is vanishingly tiny

especially when you compare it to, say, retirement. there's a generation of old people right now who are basically doing nothing and living off the government, and paying pensions is a huge, HUGE government expenditure. should we cut all the pensioners loose as well? we'd save a lot more money that way.

Severe disabilities aren't the result of hereditary genes, it's more spinning a roulette table and landing on 00.

But select removal of people with HIV/Aids from the population will help curb the spread of the disease, same for STD's and the blacks.

i think it would probably be too easy with the way the current religion system works (if the goal is to have everyone follow your religion) or boring.

>>332187561
this guy is right. religion is most useful as a way to fill in the cracks in whatever strategy you're using. e.g. if you're going very wide you'll generate a lot of unhappiness, so use religious traits to get the happiness back. makes the game a lot more flexible

so what? why should the old and infirm get a pension just because they're too old to work? if guy x is too sick to work, you don't think he should get money, but guy y is too old to work and he should? why do the individual ratios matter? the point isn't that the country as a whole makes a net profit\loss on specific people, it's that it spends a certain amount of its income on a particular group of people, and that one group is a lot more expensive

i think the logic of this argument depends on how you define these things, and you're fine to define them in your own way, but your way of defining it is arbitrary

>>332188554
people in pre-retirement (and arguably post-retirement) ages had no problem working until they were practically on their deathbeds and then spending their last years caring for children and shit. they seemed to do fine with no incentive. the whole reason that 'pensions' and 'retirement' started were because it seemed like an economically good idea at the time (it wasn't, it turned out to be a huge money hole). if anything, surely retirement motivates people to stop trying to advance their career earlier, knowing that they won't have to spend as long working?

no, the ottoman empire was a shithole

however, the decline of the current middle east is due mostly to western intervention (with a special mention of the founding of israel).
foreign intervention, in a nutshell, has been focused on
- keeping mental dictators\monarchs in power so as not to push up the price of oil
- pursuing israel's interests at the price of stability in other regions
- funding rebel groups and militias to topple anti-US leaders
- ignoring any group of people that's been pissed off by the above three behaviours

the armed rebels and freedom fighters that the US had created through instability and funded through the FBI, who had lived through decades of civil war and instability, eventually grew into what we know today as al-qaeda and ISIS.

does islam have a stake in it? yes. but there are many perfectly peaceful islamic countries, and there are many that don't have such terrible human rights records.
