Every boss in the base game other than Father Gascoigne and Blood-Starved Beast I've been able to beat in under 4 attempts.
I can atleast get him down to two thirds of his health but that's the best I can do.
I'm playing on NG+ and the Hunters Nightmare hasn't been all that bad up until this fucker.
Is this the peak difficulty? It doesn't actually get harder, r-right?

Hm as usual give us your build and weapons so we'll be able to say if you do enough damage.
Also the strat for first phase is relatively simple. Just hold him and dodge to go fuck his butt until second phase.
Now second phase was more complicated for me. His AoE attack where he launches EXCALIBAH is easy to dodge if you're not to far since it gets wider with distance. You can visceral him quite easily.

Anything you're confident with. A faster weapon is probably safer. As he is a beast you get a serrated damage bonus against him.

I found that sprinting in a straight line and then bolting left/right and jumping before he comes down worked pretty well.

Outside of Chalice Dungeons I personally only found one other boss that presented a similar level of challenge, but fortunately that one is optional.

I think I'm the only person in the world who uses the Tonitrus frequently.
It's +10, it does 160 physical damage and 80 bolt damage.
When Ludwig does his first predictable attack at the start I can get about 2888 damage in until I have to move away.
It's better than what any of my other weapons do, Ludwigs Holy Blade when strasformed does roughly the same damage, which isn't really good considering you could get 3-4 Tonitrus hits in the time frame of a single Holy Sword swing.
I've noticed the Holy Blade is good for hitting his head though.

Tonitrus L1 increases the damage buy alot so that may have been a major factor for his damage output

Use a different weapon, Tontarius is one of the worst weapons in the game because of its severely limited moveset and the fact that once you find a bolt gem it's easily replaced. It's good early game for destroying Rom and Ayy-Lmao's but it's lackluster late game.
This is especially true against Ludwig, he has 126 Bolt defense and 98 Fire defense in his first stage, in his second phase he has 168 and 119. In his second phase bolt is worse than any type of physical.
If you are invested heavily in Arcane then you should use a serrated weapon (+20% damage to Beasts) with fire gems (easy to farm). If you arnt very invested in Arcane just use a physical serrated weapon and fire paper.
Whirligig Saw is fucking amazing and is the best way to deal with Ludwig and another very hard Beast Boss in the DLC.

Dodge towards his left on his second arm swipe and start swinging. Also learn his tell for his charge attack and dodge that, it takes a lot of heath. Also learn to dodge his jumps and ceiling move. Honestly his first form is kinda a crapshoot and requires some luck, but his second form is easy as fuck and all you do is get close and spam r1.

For Ludwig, try to stick to his right and under him, then dash out as soon as his about to hit you with his legs. His second phase is way easier, first phase is bullshit.

The problem with Laurence isn't so much his patterns or anything (Like that electric werewolf fucker in the later Chalice Dungeons), but what a ridiculous amount of damage he deals, even with good fire and physical defence. You'll be doing great and have him down to about half health or whatever, but then he'll get the jump on you suddenly and kill you in two hits.
You have to keep trying. Once you start second phase (visually awesome) the fight gets way easier.
And yes, there are 2 harder bosses in the DLC.

I was lvl 80 cane build on NG+ and only could get him with the random glitch when he dies right after the start of the second phase, I think it's been patched by now.
Cleared all the DLC after that with no problems, but straigt up gave up on the Laurence fight, I tried and tried, but bastard switches patterns so often and his openings are so short, so I just leveld up to 130 to have 40 bloodtinge and 50 vit and fucked him up with chikage. Still had to summon Valtr, and when he died I continued cheese Laurence with the Simon's bow. So, um good luck there OP.

Everyone else (including Orphan and Ludwig) I can deal with reasonably well now even if they took me loads of tries first time I killed them. But the ones on my list always give me trouble, I've never not cheesed Abhorrent Beast, something about that fight is just impossible to me, his infinite super armour and the fact that he just chases you, punching you to oblivion without ever reacting to being hit make it feel weird and I just can't do it.

Holy shit I'll never understand the difficulty some people had with the first four bosses.
With Ludwig, literally just dodge left, attack his side twice, more if you have the opportunity, and then get ready to do the same again.
When he jumps to the ceiling just make sure you have enough to time to get away, then repeat again.
Never get behind him for longer than one attack.
In his second phase he is pretty easy to be honest, I got by attacking his crotch.
Living failures are piss easy.

Literally just dodge and attack his first phase, like any normal beast enemy, get used to his aoe's as well.
In his second phase, when he is following you with the slams, dodge each one then bait a sidewards swipe, this gives you time to attack once or maybe twice.
His vomit is easy to dodge, so don't worry about that.
The orphan's first form is easy with parries, after that I can't really help you, he's ridiculous.

Could you be underleveled? The DLC is endgame content. All enemies have lots of health and heavy damage output, which you've compounded by playing on NG+. I tried the Hunter's Nightmare at BL30 because I wanted the Beastcutter ASAP and I had to run past everything because I'd get killed in one or two hits.

There are two npcs you can summon.
Both of which are absolutely retarded, at least in my case.
I've been trying her with a friend, we can get her to like 10% hp but one mistake fucks us over.
Hi OP, I'm currently stuck on him right now. You know the npc corpse near the lantern that gives you 5 vials per kill? I started the ludwig fight with about 50 vials in the bank now i have 450.
So let's do some maths. 450-50=400/5=200. I use from 2-8 vials per run before I die. So let's just say my net gain of vials per run is +3. 400/3= 133. So i've been fighting Ludwig for about 133 tries now. Now I can get to his second phase 40% of the time. I think I'm just start to figuring out how to deal with his second phase now.
I'm lv75 str/arcane build. 30Vit, 25Str, 33Arc, I'm using the wheel. Don't give up anon. IMO I still feel like Orphan is tougher.

Almost every boss is made trivial if you delve deep into the chalice dungeons as early and as often as you can. Eventually you'll be swimming in gemstones that will get you to 400+ AR in no time at all.

When he jumps up blood will drip from the ceiling twice, wait for about a second after the 2nd drip and then dodge.
That's how I managed to get past it anyway, took a few attempts to get the timing right but worked pretty nicely
