Been thinking about getting into these, I've recently got into the genre as a whole after missing these when I was younger.
The games I've played though are sort of different, like Div OS, Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland.
How do these match up? Are they a little aged? I really just want good story with a world to explore and interesting dialogue and choices, the combat on these older cRPGs is normally what puts me off.

PoE isn't sort of different. It's a modern take on the Infinity Engine games, and while it's a bit closer to Baldur's Gate Torment was a Infinity game too

There are only like 3 obligatory fights in the game. Almost all of your XP and items come from character interaction, exploration and quests. You really should play it, it still looks and feels unique - the writing is consistently god tier, and the combat is infinity through a somawhat shitty interface.

PS:T combat really isn't as bad as people say. It's not good but it's not like itakes the game unplayable. Most people are just too retarded to figure out they should let Morte tank. After that you just right click and watch enemies die. Or throw some spells if you decide to go mage.
Just be sure to max wisdom on the protag no matter what. It gives an incredible boost to the XP he gets.

Yes. You yourself will be rather useless, but you'll have a big team to fuck everything down.
I did a charismatic gunslinger playthrough and it was fine. Though I had to switch to time magic to buff my group because guns are maximum shit in that game.
