If I had to guess, it's because people instinctively looked for games that they didn't have a chance to play on 3DS before when they hacked their systems, and Taiko was a popular choice to try out.
Ironically people having the ability to pirate the 3DS games probably gave the western fanbase a huge boost... at least on /v/.I'll be the first to admit that I'm guilty of this. I ended up importing Taiko V though.

Honestly, V has some really good tracks but I'm not really a fan of all the traditional music sounding tracks with tempo shifts and weird rhythms, especially the classic section and the Namco originals. 3DS1 and 2s tracklists suited my tastes better overall.
Vita DLC is pretty good though.

because Bamco actually listened to fans' requests instead of filling a shitty song quota and assuming nintendo taiko players are stay-at-home mothers who want to play EXILE instead of !!!Chaos Time!!!
