Dead Space is the series I enjoyed the most out of last gen. Which is sad if you think about it.
I wish for a sequel or remaster. The ending DLC for DS3 was absolutely insane.
So do people turn into hideous monsters because of the marker's spooky powers, or some sort parasite, or are they illusions?

Amen. Awakened DLC was amazing. Really put back the horror into the series. Seriously, DS3 gets more hate than it needs. It's easily my favorite in the trilogy.

DS3 wasn't bad in my opinion. A lot of people criticized to for not being as scary as its predecessors, but it makes sense from a story standpoint. By the third one this isn't Isaac's first rodeo, so he wouldn't be in nearly as vulnerable of a position.

What do you all want from DS4 if it ever comes to be? I kind of want to see a return to the horror scene in 4. And then a little more action mixed into the next one but on a DS2 level at the most.

I have no clue. I feel like the series is stuck in a limbo of sorts.
It can't be super scary like it used to be were too far in Necromorphs just aren't scary anymore beyond the "Oh fuck oh shit oh fuck" thrills action can give if done right. That's certainly something I felt in every game regardless of how much genuine "horror" was there.
The series has always been high octane, besides the world building and lore, and I don't think that should change.
Certainly some new innovative ideas might be welcome. But I'm the wrong person to suggest what those might be.

Fuck that thing was powerful in DS2. Especially if you memorized how many Necros spawned when and sometimes where.

The space section was very, very good. It is one of the highlights of the entire series in my opinion.
Then you get to the snow planet and it suddenly feels like a completely different game. Feels like the budget jumped off a cliff.

Necromorphs are some moon-sized space cthulhus that use markers to procreate.
Living beings get manipulated into building more markers, murder people and kill themselves. Dead beings turn into little necromorphs that, when there are enough, converge into a new moon.
It's kind of a cool concept.

The DLC for 3 is basically a way to give an ending to the series if another game doesn't come out in the future from what I remember.

It's an alien DNA, that replicates through absorbsion of other living matter, that was discovered in a dormant state on the original marker. Ignore the ending of DS2 and DS3 in it's entirety and you get the true story of Dead Space.
Dead space 4 should take place on Earth, you descend to the bottom of the ocean to find the Marker Altman sunk.
