I think it depends on the game. A lot of games which depended on the analog sticks wouldn't let you turn it off. Play a really old PS2 game which doesn't use the analog sticks. It'll definitely let you turn them off.
>>
>>332134596
That was for most PS1 games though. There wasn't a point in adding that button again for the PS2 other than backwards compatibility for the PS1

PS1 controllers used different software than the later Analoged PS1 and PS2 controllers. Pressing the analog button turned off joystick support which let it register on the older PS1 games.

For example, the first Crash Bandicoot did not support analog sticks and required the light to be off.

The real question is: Were you the kid that played games with the analog sticks or D pad??

I always used the D pad since thats what i grew up with, didnt start using the sticks until shooters became popular.

>that era of games where different shooters had button layouts
>that era of standard tank controls for shooters
>side strafe on the left stick didnt become the standard until call of duty 3

I remember those sticks on my grey ps2 you know the one that played the original spyro and crash. That button was a left over from what I was told.
It was originally supposed to be a soft reset or something like that but people kept hitting it by mistake.

By the time the they noticed it the moulds where already made, so rather than scrap it they just made a button that does literally nothing but light up a small led in the controller.
>>
>>332135884
That only works with the actual console.

So much underage in this thread it's disgusting.

The "turbo" button made it so that holding a button down spammed a repeated input instead of a constant one, i.e. it was for ultra-fast button mashing in games where pressing the button as fast as possible was an advantage. It most certainly did NOT make the fucking system run faster, Jesus Christ.
>>
>>332143432
At least when playing FF7 on PS2 or PS3, you have to turn the sticks off or you can't even move with the d-pad. Not sure how it works with the PS4.

Currently emulating the very first MoH and there is an option for an fps layout that pretty much your regular modern day fps with aiming and shooting on triggers and with 0 deadzone this shit is actually playable even with easy aiming off.

But yeah, this shit isnt default and in most psx games it look like devs couldnt be arsed to develop a functional analog control scheme.

>>332146071
That's the thing. A lot of pc's at the time (clones included) had varying implementations of the turbo button. And the implementation that made most sense was to have the turbo button set to ON (light on) upon boot to indicate it running at its fastest speed. And I don't need to google it because I had a 2 pcs in the early 90s, a 286 that did not have a switch but instead used key combos and then a 486 with a button.
>>
>>332146492
I tried it back then and it was pretty horrible. Maybe it could be passable for someone who's never played before and doesn't have the muscle memory of the 1.1 or 1.2 schemes.
>>
>>332134945
Its slows the core clock of the CPU to run older games.
>>
>>332134452
In the transition from PSX to PS2 a lot of gamers where accustom to use the digital bottoms since the PSX games used only the digital buttons. So this buttom gave the option to turn off the analog stick and used the digital directional ones as the analog ones.

Not all the time. There were some machines that booted downclocked although rare. see https://youtu.be/p2q02Bxtqds?t=193

>you pressed it and it turned green

This is what I was talking about earlier. Manufacturers had different ways to doing this. Some had the light ON to indicate full speed. Other manufacturers did the opposite. But the fact of the matter is, the turbo button is a toggle. It just made more sense that turbo on = normal speed, it was less confusing.
