The PS4K and most devices that output in 4K will likely detect what your TV can display and try smaller and smaller resolutions until it works. Any device that is strictly locked to 4K wouldn't fly yet because most dipshits who buy devices they can't use will assume it is broken.

This. My nephew has a 720p TV from years ago and his Xbox One just "down" scales it. Still renders in 1080p but you can see the blurred text in menus real easily. Kinda pisses me off that even if you set a console to display in lower resolutions, it will always render at same resolution. I'd gladly lower res to get a framerate boost for some games but whatever

It all depends on what the PS4K is. There are no specifics other than what 4K resolution implies in the name. For all we know it'll only play 4K Blurays in the true resolution and upscale 1080P to 4K for the games. Or it could apply a general performance boost and make playing any game more palatable on ant TV set compared to the original. That is unless the locked down nature of consoles stops existing games from preforming any better due to it not recognizing better specs.
