Why isn't Guitar Hero 3 on Steam?
Is it a good game?

Guitar Hero is for underages or babbies.
Man up and get Rocksmith.

I believe this one and World Tour on PC support custom songs, so it's decent because of that.

What makes it superior to GH?
Custom charts aren't a plus, they're neutral at best. There's no quality control and there's no backroom to decide what a good chart is or not. When there is, like Osu!, it's filled with retards.

You're right, I forgot ITG.

Also, because they're some of the most creative games in the genre (western wise atleast) and are incredibly challenging, the staple of a good rhythm game.

I could not explain it without it sounding like a joke.

Just know that without practice, learning an instrument is much easier than playing this, and successfully playing this allows you to mentally reach a greater feeling and awareness of the entire universe.

I doubt a pleb like you would know, though.

It uses a real guitar, with tab provided by the bands themselves. It's pretty excellent for that, and there's some good games built into it for technique learning, but it's kind of flawed in picking up some techniques, bends in particular are annoying on it.

It's a good way to start off, but it won't really help you write songs or become a musician.

>>332114000
I play guitar in a relatively successful local band, and Rocksmith is still fun my dude, music isn't some super serious club you're in.

It's a good way to learn a song without just sitting in front of a piece of tab for an hour, or spending fucking ages trying to figure it out by ear. Sometimes you just want to chill and learn something new, and Rocksmith does a good job at that.

It's probably the worst one. If you really like arcade style gameplay it has guitar battles where you can fuck with your opponent by picking up items that can, for example, swap their buttons around. But outside of that it's the worst one by a mile and the people behind the first two games had nothing to do with it since they abandoned ship and worked on Rock Band instead

>>
>>332115102
But it's virtually pointless.
Just learn how play a fucking guitar, you dumb idiot.
>>
>>332114767
It's not even about whether you're bending it correctly, it's that the game will only recognise the bend if you hit the normal note first, and then bend up, which becomes incredibly difficult to do seeing as the recognition isn't always the best.

Whereas if you're actually playing a song, normally you hit the note and bend it instantly, which rocksmith doesn't let you do.

>>332114903
It's got nothing to do with overbending or underbending though, it's literally a detection issue on the part of the game. Though it could do a better job at explaining how you tell how far to bend, and when you'ev gone too far.

>>

It has, actually, as the note detection technique works on a pitch based program made by those hotheads devs.
Overbending\underbending\bending too fast makes the script to fail, hence why the detection sucks.

Considering that I have played both versions (while pirating all the DLC on the first one, some reason I couldn't manage to get the DLC pirated on the 2014 version) and have purchased the Disc Import tool (along with the fact that the DLC you buy from the first game transfers over to the 2014 game) to play RS1 songs on 2014 there are already immediate differences between the way the songs are played in between the two versions tells me that what you said is false. If you also keep up with the Devs on the forums they do mention that they have guitar transcribers who figure out how most of the songs are played. Also in few of the songs if you play by ear and not exactly how the notes are shown on the screen (ie. pressing down on a fret of the same note instead of using an open string such as in Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes) you'll begin to notice a pattern that QA
wasn't in the highest tier of production.

Oh and Marc Bolan was totally alive long enough to mention to Ubisoft that 20th Century Boy was tuned differently when they tried to update the song for the 2014 version.
>>
>>332115335
Sure, it's shit at picking up anything but bends done specifically how it means them to be done, and just refuses to think you did one at all if it's not perfect, but I was referring to when it even knows you're trying to do a bend.

You can pull it off perfectly, but as you said, if you do it too quick, and it doesn't realise you hit the normal note first, it just never recognises.

Thanks for that.
It's weird because I followed the guide to a tee, (several times in fact), and for the life of me I could get every note to detect fine (tested it all myself), except for the first few frets on the low E string.
The game only would pick them up about 50% of the time. Even changing the guitars dial settings didn't help either.

I did pick up the PS3 version of 2014 on the cheap with an extra cable so I might try a new cable and see if it helps. (And try the PS3 version as well and see if it's a compatibility issues with my PC)

Guitar is fine in an amp which is what makes it weird. I turned the volume right up in settings on PC and game with no change. Official cable too.

Right next to 3 and above 5, it's my most played. Probably because you could import songs from 5 and I think smash hits to it so it had incredible replayability just on replaying songs. 3 will always have the best story mode, as simplistic as it was.

You can just use a third party cable, which are much cheaper.

Them forcing you to use their cable was a terrible business decision though, like, who thought that would be a good idea, as soon as they stop providing them, their game would die.

The cables aren't easy to buy on their own in a lot of places either.

You can play rocksmith and literally learn the notes on the neck and a couple scales and be a competent musician. There's been plenty of musicians that barely even had that.

You can't just go
>Sure, you're playing an instrument, but unless you play it my way, you're not really able to play the instrument

A musician is just someone who is making their own music, which you barely need any theory to do if you've got a good ear.

>>
>>332120067
>IIDX is too hard to play

It's a primary reason why IIDX is so good.

Well, I'm posting in this thread, so while I'm here:

- I consider IIDX to be an instrument. Press key, get sound. Can't say the same of many other music games.
- I really shouldn't be surprised, but I honestly am still surprised how a decade - repeat, a decade - after these games hit mainstream in the US, there's still an instant and constant "learn a real instrument faggot" discussion in every music game thread. Every time. Every single time.
- Learning an instrument doesn't endow improvisational skill. If you don't have an ear for music, no amount of reading tabs or sheet music will get you to play an instrument as any other professional musician does.

Basically yeah.
But my view of it as an instrument is something I generally keep to myself.
I've played saxophones in grade school and high school bands so I'm quite aware of how an actual instrument works - and I'm also quite aware that my playing a saxophone and learning how to do so with sheet music did absolutely nothing to engender any kind of improvisational talent within me. Because there is none there.

I "knew" how to play a saxophone but I wouldn't dare call myself a saxophone player, because I was as useless as a corpse without sheet music.

This is the main aspect which I find humorous about the argument. "Learning" doesn't mean a fucking thing. Not a fucking thing.
>>
>>332126834

Eventually guitar or bass just makes sense, while on GH or RB you're stuck learning songs individually because the "tabs" were pulled out of the ass of those note trackers and they have 5 buttons to begin with.

I may believe the IIDX guy and I still have my reservations, but I was able to play stuff like Play With Me and Through the Fire and Flames on expert in fucking months. Guitar Hero is easy peasy.
I mean, the problem with rhythm games is that they can only throw so many patterns at you, especially one as old as IIDX. Eventually you'll memorize and recognize clusters and, provided they don't throw bullshit like increasing the BPM to something only the fucking Flash can see, you'll manage to beat most songs with just a bit of practice.

Why do you think improvisation is the defining aspect of a musician?
The act of a musician is making music, improvisation most times is just running scales and arpeggios over a known harmonic progression, it's not the most important skill to have (well, if you're not playing jazz).

Yngwie Malmsteen isn't a particular strong case of a guitarist known for it's improvisational skills, although I might be wrong.

>>332127995
I don't feel like it, I've been playing jazz for years now, and although improvisation is often defined as "composing music on the spot" I find it very different to actual composition.
When improvising you're working under a strict set of rules: the harmonic progression of the song, sure, you can make whatever you want inside it, and you can even go outside it with chromatisms and stuff, but generally speaking, the amount of things you can do are limited.
I find it very different to actual composition, where you're free to make music whatever way you like, it's like making something thinking ahead versus just going with whatever pops in your mind at the moment thinking inside a specific frame, sure, you're both times "composing" music in the sense that you're making a genuine artistic expression that comes out of yourself, but the process is very different.

If you can't improvise or come up with music of your own in any way, then you're no musician that I agree with, but I find in the end it's a pretty useless definition because I find it hard to believe that someone exists that can doodle with an instrument and find a combination of sounds that they like.
