It is time once again to share your levels and beg for stars! I'll try to play as much as I can of what's posted here.

Here's a traditional SMW castle level I just finished.
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/8E67-0000-0209-0593
I feel like the beginning might be a bit uninspired, since I made it more as filler after I made the last section and the sub-section first. Let me know what you think.

Shillan my most recent levels in the mSMB3 series:

Just got the game today. What are some basic dos and donts to level design?

Or give me all the donts so I can make the most cancerous level possible
>>
>>332113105
Invisible blocks, enemies in blocks, doors or pipes that lead to instant death, and enemy spam are all pretty dickish.
>>
>>332113105
If you're trying to make a challenging level, the main two questions to ask yourself when making any element of the course is "Is this fun?" and "Will people know how to do this?" Putting shit that isn't fun and shit where you have to have preexisting knowledge of the course is terrible design
>>
Mysterious Mansion The 7 coins
>https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/1DBD-0000-0206-DE03
Make your way through the mansion collecting the 7 red coins. Back-tracking is possible.
>>
>>332108194
First clear on yours.

It's okay, could use a little more consistency with the hazards used (the magikoopa portion didn't really add anything), and a little decor to spice it up a bit but I felt the challenge was good and I had fun with it
>>
Does Mario Maker have slopes yet?
>>
>>332112470
Played the autoscroller since I love a good autoscroller. Disappointed with how short it was; could use some coins going through the jumps to telegraph to the player where to go a little, then again with how short it is that didn't matter much.

Yeah, it was one of the first levels that I made and after making what I thought was a strong start I just kind of fell of on ideas. Did you die on the last part? I felt that I maybe didn't make that obvious enough.
>>
>>332113872
I don't understand the big deal with slopes, there's far better assets that could be added - like some fucking desert stuff and just more theme+themed elements in general. Slopes wouldn't add that much to most levels.
>>
>>332114207
It was actually the bit with the spiked wall that got me, I jumped right off the edge of the previous area and didn't react in time for it. The part after that I did fine first try.

3,000 enemies flooding the screen is a big no no. Also, jumps designed to look easy so the player is baited into hitting an invisible block and dying.

Putting instant death scenarios at the beginning and creating "pick a pipe/door" choices that lead to a guaranteed death if you choose wrong are also frowned uopn.

I think the best advice is to play a level several times before uploading it, while trying to do it from the perspective of a player and not the level's maker. That always tends to help me identify problems not readily apparent during construction.
>>
>>332113105
Okay anon, listen up, because this is important. You won't start out with everything unlocked, it'll tell you that you have to wait a week or something to unlock everything, but you don't. Here's how to unlock everything day one.

First, go into the editor and place down everything with a !, ie everything that you haven't placed down at least once. Once you've placed down everything that you have at least once, start placing down hundreds of bricks, 10x10 at a time. (You can use the multi-grab + copy tools to do this quickly).

Once you've placed down enough bricks, it'll tell you that "the shipment has arrived earlier than expected" or something. Again, place down everything new at least once, then start copy pasting bricks. Rinse and repeat with everything new they give you, and make sure to switch up the game and theme when they give you new ones. It's a bit tedious, but the alternative is waiting 9 days to unlock everything.
>>
>>332113105
Everyone will be worse at your level than you expected, and most of them will only give it two or maybe three tries. Don't be afraid to be generous with the power-ups and use checkpoints.
>>
>>332113536
Great detail. I'm a sucker for themed worlds. Little easier than my preference but I still had great fun with it.

Weird you had that pswitch in the same room as providing a tanooki leaf, I was half execting a secret area for taking the switch through with me, but disappointingly I didn't find one.
>>
>>332115919
Thank you. The P-Switch was a little unnecessary, I'm not sure why I thought it was a good idea. But I'm glad you enjoyed the level.

One thing I've found is very helpful, taking a break and going back to playing your level again. You play it from the perspective of someone out of practice and you start to rethink the decisions you've made for certain challenges. You think to yourself "this is really annoying. I should remove it.".

First one is honestly just boring. No enemies or obstacles or real hazards other than falling, nothing original at all in there.

In the other one right now, significantly better but a little tedious that you have to backtrack in the first area. Also not a lot of players know about spinning on spiky shells, so that could explain a lack of popularity/clears perhaps. Nothing really new here either, seems pretty standard mario world mild challenge mix.

>Spicy Trials

https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/621A-0000-0202-C4DF

The idea behind this one is that I wanted to make a course that was entirely fire-themed and had multiple rooms, each with a different kind of fire obstacle. I employed some foreshadowing in the decorations and level design to signify what comes up in each room. The final room is a combination of everything you faced up until that point.

Please give me constructive criticism, as I'm not much of a level designer but would love to improve.
>>
>>332122509
Honestly?
It's pretty trash. I can appreciate what you were trying to do, and the first section is alright, though a little dickish with the enemy placement, and multiple plays are required to time yourself properly.

The problem is itse too sporadic by the red wiggler section, shit moves fast and timing jumps between it all is painful considering you have less then a second to react due to the speed and the fact it aligns to the center of the screen.

It's just not very fun, and I generally like harder levels.
>>
>>332123497
It's pretty good, great difficulty curve abd the placement of checkpoints make it forgiving despite the odd lack of powerups.

I guess 1 suggestion I have is that you should include some coins throughout the course, just to give the player something to collect whilst feeling rewarded (i.e. whaly coins exist at all). Also, some secret/optional areas, preferably in an area that takes extra skill to reach, would be great. Otherwise, decent level. Well done anon

>Also, there were platforms you could pass through if you didn't see them.
Well now I feel stupid.

As for the pandering: you don't necessarily need to keep things so short and simple in order to ensure casuals will beat them, just provide powerups on a semi-regular basis (I feel once per 4 screens typically works for your standard level), and make use of checkpoints if it's long or if there's a particularly tough challenge just ahead (like a boss or autoscroll section especially). Don't be upset if despite all this your levels are still marked as "Expert" by the system - Easy is 99% auto levels; Normal is largely easy; Expert is closest to an actual normal mode imo.

>>332128164
Personally, I find levels are usually better off when their challenge isn't forced. Instead, I'd recommend you to focus on a theme and gradually throw different ideas at it, increasing in number or complexity as you go - I felt your level threw too many different skills at once, making it too frustrating (at least to me, but I didn't spend too much time with it). I'm not a game designer though, just speculating based on what's popular (that isn't just another fucking auto level) and what official Mario stuff seems to do.

I won't be playing anymore levels tonight I'm afraid, but still bookmarking any that show up.

I tried, they put a little red circle and dash icon over it, preventing you from re-uploading. It's pretty invasive. You have to create a new save, and make the level from scratch. This is why two of my stages are gone from my list.

Oh ok.

https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/profile/MyPetCocoa?type=posted

I normally don't do that, but there have been people apparently that become interested in my levels, but are too lazy to have to look at my image and type all of that shit in by hand. They would rather just click a bookmarks link and enter it. Thought I would give it a shot just this once, but it didn't work out. Oh well.

>>332131436
>>332131520
Christ dude, this is actually an impressive number of levels, but perhaps it'd be better to just post your profile, or just a choice few levels? I can clearly see that people like your levels but I doubt someone's gonna click though all of that
>>
Still, he is bumping the thread.
>>
>>332131871
I normally use the image here:
>>332131752
But someone told me that they refuse to have to go to the Wii U and type the code out themselves by looking at the image, when they can just click a link to the bookmarks page and bookmark it.

Any advice?
Or should I just stick with my picture?
>>
>>332131518
Maybe they were just shitty levels anon
>>
>>332132040
You could just post a link to your profile, you could post a link to the first level of each "world", or you could make that image a little easier to read. It's not a big deal, but I would just post a link to your profile along with the image next time you want to shill.
>>
>>332132040
Just link to the first level each DKC game and your profile. If anyone asks you to link more than that tell them not to be such a lazy fuck.
>>
>>332132243
Well they aren't worlds.
The image is colored and structured that way because I improved it based on what a anon told me. To make the text readable regardless of size. Have the background and text constrast.
I link to my profile, but most people seem to just go to it, scroll down, and just play the first level they see.
Because they can't be bothered to look through so many levels, they would rather just shortcut straight to a level and bookmark it.

You think I could use something to make it smaller? Like a url shortener or something?
>>
>>332132163

Well, just saying, it does happen. Not lying.
>>
>>332132752
Do you have a pic? I want to know what this elusive icon looks like

I am going to have to alter that list again pretty soon anyways too. Since I am 40 stars away from the next level, and have 6 of the 9 next levels already made.

Added another 15 or so levels in this thread to my bookmarks. I'm going to have a fun night.
Here's the last course I made for the red coin update and the first one I've ever actually used sound effects in.
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/0CD2-0000-01F6-4D31
>>
My greatest fear in shilling my levels in these threads is someone who I know IRL seeing them, because a lot of my friends play this game too. I've done such a good job of hiding my power level that to have it be ruined just to get my mario maker levels more played doesn't seem worth it.
>>
I love how the latest update lets you look at player deaths in your level in better detail.
>tfw seeing all the people who jumped into a bottomless pit just because I put an arrow pointing into it or a line of 3 coins leading into it.
There is no reason why it should still work after all this time. It's not even a trick like thinking there might be a ledge down there because it's so high up. They jump from the ground layer into a pit that's one block lower than them.
>>
>>332132531
Pick a few of your levels that you want to shill and post the bookmark links for them. Tell people a little more about them in detail.

Change it up a little with different levels whenever you post. Say "these are my personal favorites" or "these need more plays" or things like that. It takes a little work to be a good salesman.

If you have tons of levels, just posting your profile or a huge list will get people to ignore you a lot of the time, or they'll just pick your first or last level and nothing more.
>>
How many keys/red coin doors can you have in a level?
Thanks to that last update which I've been ignoring because I've been playing my Vita , I can finally make some Adventure of Link styled dungeons.

4chan, especially /v/, isn't as bad and underground to the mainstream as you seem to think. Plus, if one of your friends did see you posting here that'd mean they browse the site anyway?

>>332135642
>tfw seeing all the people who jumped into a bottomless pit just because I put an arrow pointing into it or a line of 3 coins leading into it.
Why would you even do that?
>>
>>332136038
>you can have 8 keys, 4 doors for each section
I believe you can actually place a huge number of keys, but you can only carry 8 at a time.
>10 pink coins, 5 for each section
And all pink coins collected for an entire level will add up to a single key no matter what.

If you tell a player to do something chances are likely they're going to believe the level designer, since it's the level designer's job to guide a player through the challenge.

>Troll levels
A misleading name and one red herring doesn't make a "troll level".
Players should be able to think critically, especially in a game where the rules of the game have already been established.
If they didn't then no-one would have finished Metal Gear Solid 2.
>>
>>332137879
Well the "don't move" thing isn harmless but arrows and coins leading to pits, even if at ground level where they can be assessed as a pit (although it's noteworthy that if they're in the screen above it's possible that the drop isn't a pit) is just blatantly trying to ruse the player for no reason whatever. It's not a challenge to them, it's just for a cheap laugh at your expense and not theirs, simply put: it's poor game design
