Playing ff7 on psp for the first time ever, any recommendations? I've never beaten a final fantasy before, almost best VI and got half way through IV. Other then dragon quest and mother jrpgs were never my thing but because of how fameous it is I thought I should at least try it.

The steal mechanic is based on the lvl of the opponent and the level of the person using steal.
The bigger the difference between your levels changes the chance to steal. Higher you are to them the harder it is. It doesn't go the other way iirc.
There's only a few instances of stuff you should totally steal right away, I think none of it is from bosses. Which felt different than the other games.

I have to disagree strongly. ATB was still quite new and was working just fine. I think it wasn't obsoleted until the introduction of the Playstation 2 where more elaborate systems could be introduced. And with systems such as XIII's paradigm battles, I think I'm quite fine with the "stagnation" of JRPGs in the late 90s and early 2000s
Personally, VII and VIII were among my first RPGs and up there on my favorite games. I can understand people not getting into them, but I just can't agree with people that view them as trash. I obviously have some bias, but I feel it was objectively a huge step up for RPGs of the time.
