Average against a CPU opponent, but as soon as I play against another player (especially online) it all just falls apart and I start spamming the same moves over and over. My three main fighters where this happens is Skullgirls, SF2 and SF4U.

Do I need a fight stick to properly play fighters?
I've used the DS3's D-pad for some fighters in the past but it's a lot easier on the thumbs to use analog sticks so I've been trying the 360/Xbone pad depending on the platform. Moves can still be janky and inaccurate though; it's just a lot of money to drop on a genre I'm almost universally poor at.

I just kick and jump and do low kicks until I win.
I always do that while playing againts my friends and they get angry.
I can never be sure.
I do okay in pools, but that's pools and I haven't made it out in any of the 3 majors I've attended. I seem to get fucked in brackets and put with top 8 or top 4-making killers in my first or second match so losers is a given, and then I lose pools LF.
If I netplay ranked or in rooms with randoms, I usually just win hard. But I don't do it often and prefer to play with people I know, and when I'm playing people I know I get my shit pushed in because I play with actually good players that end up in top 16 at least of majors. Against them I can kind of do stuff and take rounds, but I'll win like 1 in 10 matches.
I always call myself terrible and the worst because I am, but the general populace of any given game I actually put effort into is usually so unbelievably free that I have a hard time saying I'm gutter shit sometimes. I hate the way I play. It's not good enough. It doesn't help that the only games I really truly care about are dead as fuck.

For 4 button fighters like Tekken and MK i wouldn't worry about it but for 6 button fighters i think it would be best to have a stick so things make more sense.

Nope. You're good to go on just a regular controller if you prefer it. You see both controllers and fight sticks in tournaments. Fight stick can be a little easier to use once you adapt to it but really there isn't a huge difference. Skill is skill. What truly matters are the fundamentals.

Above average. I can beat most of my friends and I do alright online. My strengths are my patience, near-autistic levels of research when I get into a game and ability to adapt/learn quickly.
Never been salty once while playing either. The friend that got me into fighters told me to learn from each loss and I took it to heart. Only been to a few small local tourneys during SFIV's run but even when I started getting stomped I'd laugh and genuinely compliment the player afterward.

I am fucking fantastic when it comes to Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Virtua Fighter. 3D fighting games come pretty easily to me since they were all I played when I was young fighting game wise. Never got to play 2D stuff a lot, and now whenever I do play with friends that definitely shows up. Only time I do well in 2D fighting games is if I take high/top tier characters (Akuma in SF IV, Iori in KoF 13)
