Is Gandalf a warrior or a mage class? He barely casts any spells he might be a warrior who clicked wrong class and decided to roll with it.

That Balrog was nothing though, it had been locked down in the Mines for too long. Balrogs could apparently sprint fucking fast and even fly.

Gandal was a Wizard that had to hold back his powers, because trying to match power with power would only lead to his corruption. It's why he refuses the ring (even if he is tempted).

Gandalf has too many attributes from different classes to be locked down as one. He's an upgraded class; an arch-mage (who happens to hide his powerlevel).

Middle earth is a low fantasy and there's no powerful spell casting mages, so to say. They exist more as a supporters, basically wise old people trying to help the world.

They have a couple of spells but they rarely if ever use them.

>"It might be so," Gandalf answered softly. "But our trial of strength is not yet come. And if words spoken of old are true, not by the hand of man shall he falll, and hidden from the Wise is the doom that awaits him."

Strength for strength, stronger/weaker, the books never cleared up. But the man himself said he couldn't actually take him down. To Gandalf and everyone else(except women and hobbits apparently), he might as well have been god mode flagged.

Actually Tolkien wrote in his margins for his drafts:

Tolkien had a lot of rewrites and it's very unclear how much was supposed to be in the Silmarillion.

Personally, I think that if there were only like 5 Balrogs Durin's Bane would not have been allowed to escape. Whereas if there were hundreds it'd be easy to lose track of one or two.

He's not actually wrong though(except probably in the count of how many were loose.) Gothmog for one, had to be stronger than the Moria lurker.

Though he couldn't beat Fingon until one of his buttbuddies suckerpunched him from behind, so I don't know what that means if the most powerful Balrog can't kill one buttblasted Noldor king by himself.

Can Gandalf win against MAGES?
>>
Just being able to cast magic makes you a mage in LOTR universe.
And there's like 3-5 of them at any moment in the world.
>>
>>332068137

The "cliche" is a couple thousand years old as Gandalf was based on the demi-god Väinämöinen from Finnish folklore.
>>
>>332067808
Nigga, read the books, he was constantly casting extremely high level divination, abjuration, and enchantment spells.

The gods he serves have some kind of hate boner for necromancy and evocation, that's why only evil spell casters use those schools.
>>
It seems like Tolkien's later writing basically made Gandalf and the other wizards into half-assed Angels. That's some stupid-ass George Lucas shit, though.

sauron himself, with the ring, was killed by a buttblasted noldor king (and a dunedain king). buttblasted noldorians aren't to be underestimated.
>>
>>332068328
First off, the finnish folklore that you're citing from Gandalf's wiki page is not "a couple thousand years old." Secondly, have you read the source material because it reads much more like mythos (i.e. more a biblical collection of creation stories and allegories about what the cultures values in its people) than an actual literature work for literary consumption?
>>
>>332066806
> the most powerful and wise of the maiar to kill it.
Is my reading comprehension failing me here or are you saying Gandalf is the most powerful and wise Maiar?
>>
>>332068721
Which Noldor king was that? I only seem to remember Sauron being rekt by Orome's hound (Which only routed Sauron) and when Numenor sank
>>
>>332068208
They never hunted down the Balrogs in the Sil. The Gods came and fucked Melkor and his armies scattered. If Sauron was allowed to escape then it's easy to assume one his soldiers could vanish.

>>332068209
If he was trying to say that it doesn't hold up to modern standards because it's been overdone then that's a bit more fair. It was worded very poorly but I can't argue other than literary appreciation should go a bit deeper and involve the historical context in which it was written.

Wizard. Hes just an old school wizard who had to memorize spells, and only could use them when absolutley neccessary. Maiar get longsword proficiency.

Gandalf could've just rode around blowing shit up, but the mortals had to learn to solve their problems.
>>
>>332068070
So Gandalf single-handedly killed a demigod capable of demolishing armies after falling down into a nigh-infinite chasm. Doesn't that make hi at least a demigod, if not a god himself?
>>
>>332066413
So are Elfs and Dwarfs, but those were also classes in AD&D
>>
And then there's Aragorn, who just maxed charisma and ends up drowning in willing supporters and elven pussy.

Enough points in speech/diplomacy to end up recruiting a new army at every damn corner.
>>
>>332067761
That actually has nothing to do with high or low fantasy.

Rule of tjumb is: is it set in another world? It's high fantasy.
Though going by Tolkiens word LotR is indeed low fantasy as everything he wrote happened on our earth in a not recorded history.
>>
>>332069172

Gil-Galad, who was Fingon's son, so to some degree diluted in Noldol Buttblast.

Though by the second age, like you allude, Sauron himself was already pretty rekt compared to 100% Sauron, so it probably evens out.
>>
>>332069304
He is a demigod, or an angel, depending on how you look at it. He basically serves arch angels, who could undoubtedly be considered gods
>>
>>332069304

>>
He's a Wizard. End of discussion. Every other class is inferior to Wizards.
>>
>>332069375
Well, he had help, as you said, from Elendil. Besides, Gil-Galad was barbecued by Sauron, if I'm not mistaken. That does not one rekt'd Sauron make

>>
>>332069404
He was.
Jesus, does nobody know anything?
When he decided he wanted to help the free peoples of middle earth he had to accept aortal shell and cast away lots og his intelligence and might.
He's an istar. No maiar anymore. He ain't on the level he was prior to being Gandalf.

Basically he was nerfed to hell.
He could still defeat the balrog because the latter was weakened as well for sleeping for I dunno how long. And he still only manages to defeat it barely and died himself afterwards.
>>

No disagreement there(not the same anon who mentioned it originally).

Feanor was literally made of burning etherial asshurt and nothing else, so the further down his line you get, the less of that severe buttblast they can bring up, I guess. Gil-Galad seemed pretty chillax for a Noldor - most of those first-agers tended to flip their fucking shit at some point.

Gandalf actually wears one of the rings of power since the third age, which started after Sauron was defeated by the Last Alliance at Mount Doom. It's the ring of fire, one of the 3 elven rings. It gives its wearer the ability to inspire hope in his peers, although Gandalf was already good at that. I think the ring was lost when Gandalf's grey form perished.

Why do we always compare by Lina... She is not the most powerful mage. Here Dragon Slave is just as powerful as everyone else's and every other spell she uses thats more powerful has to 1) Fuse with the Sword of Light or 2) have a literal god take over her body which at that point its not Lina casting it anymore.

>Here Dragon Slave is just as powerful as everyone else's

If you mean here as in LOTR verse I don't think anyone else can cast a town wiping level spell. If you meant "her" Dragon Slave is still the ultimate in black magic and most people in the universe don't have the mana capacity to use it. Lina in particular has a very high capacity, which her talismans amplify even further.

She can also use Ragna blade and Giga Slave without the sword of light or having LoN possess her. LoN only possessed her once in her Giga Slave uses
>>

So the world basically dies of its own boredom as the song of the gods stops echoing. It's funny how Melkor, the prime evil of the universe was basically the only thing that kept existence interesting and life world living.

>>
>>332078118
the meanings have kinda changed, cause of the massive succes that fantasy became. Low fantasy doesn't really mean 'fantasy elemnets in our, real world' anymore, it's more commonly used as 'low magic different world' with many 'real' elements like everyone dieying easily and whatnot, i.e AsoIaF
>>
>>332079306
She never once casted Giga Slave without SoL or LoN.

Ragna Blade requires Xellos's Talismans. If you put them on Sylphiel or even Zolf who can both preform the Dragon Slave I'm sure they could cast the Ragna Blade as well.
>>
>>332079716
Well it all ends with Melkor coming back from the Void with all his posse and every single hero resurrected to fight them.
>>
>>332076475
The movie was also going completely retarded and shouldn't be taken seriously

The ghosts didn't fight at the actual war either

Gandalf stated he was prepared to use every bit of power he has - to burn himself out of existence in order to utterly destroy the witch king if he went into the city.

As gandalf the Grey, he fought all 9 of them in the fellowship
As the white, he was called more powerful than them all combined

Well then that sounds pretty cool. In fact, it sounds like in the grand scheme of things Melkor was always a good guy in the celestial artistic sense. Everyone tries to sing the same boring song that does nothing and goes nowhere, and Melkor sneaks in his own notes and beats that make everything more interesting. I suppose it's not polite to mess with the conductor of an orchestra but fuck you for hoarding the spacewaves so long with your banal shit.

Evolution-R. I imagine it's happened in the novels as well.

>Ragna Blade requires Xellos's Talismans. If you put them on Sylphiel or even Zolf who can both preform the Dragon Slave I'm sure they could cast the Ragna Blade as well.

Lina's bucket capacity is large enough that she could spew out a few dragon slaves and still not be tired. We don't know how big Sylphiel or Zolf's are and zolf's a ded nigga anyway. Lina with the talismans barely has enough bucket to cast it.
>>

I think the way Jackson utilized the Istaris magic and magic in general in the LoTR trilogy of movies was pretty good because it was subtle and didn't involve things like excessive flames and magic missiles. It was more telekinesis, light, manipulation of the world and creatures in it, corrupting influences and confusion. Like the force pulls, grips and persuasion in A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Return of the Jedi had Sheev cast lightning which went a little bit too much into the realm of using force like stereotypical magic.

Speaking of Kalevala, I once had the idea that a sequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R could be loosely based on parts of the Kalevala lore, where the one prime artifact that every stalker seeks is basically a philosopher's stone like Sampo. Put something through one side and riches come out of the other. There could also be some weird tentacle monsters or whatever other kinds of thingies there are in those stories.

Not that I am disputing that the nonsensicality of Potter universe, that guy does forget the fact that the Wizards can do shit like instant teleportation, at the moment mind controlling and memory alteration, become friggin invisible, and turn themselves into animals and shit. Guns are arguably better in a fight than magic in HP universe, but the other shit magic can do makes it rather easy to accept how the Wizards have kept themselves hidden from the muggles.
>>
>>332085107
His plan was to make WIZARDS GREAT AGAIN!
>>
>>332085281
But why do they need to keep themselves hidden? Because they're stronger than muggles?
>>

>>
>>332073686
The weakness of mail is it puts it's weight entirely on the shoulders because it merely hangs on the wearer. If you want to go full historical, it was common to use belts and straps to alter the weight distribution more evenly on the body. Making it far easier to move in.. and a good deal less tiring.

That said yes, that picture is obvious fantasy wank. As is all fantasy. What's you're point?

This, I haven't read them in 20 years but I believe he did quite a bit more casting in the books.
>>
>>332085476
No, it is the opposite actually.
Muggles outnumber the Wizards so badly it isn't even funny, and they should there ever be conflict between the two, with modern tech, the muggles would slaughter the wizards.

That is why the Wizards stay hidden. How would governments react if they were suddenly made aware of a whole group of people with supernatural abilities that could be easily used to depose and destabilize countries? You'd have some sort of Wizard Xman project going up instantly, with governments trying to either weaponize the wizards, study them, or eliminate them due to the potential threat they pose.
