It's very simplistic and anyone who's played the harder Fire Emblem games won't have much trouble.
It's good for what it is though, and the artstyle is nice.

This is very important. VC's ranking system is abysmal. It's based entirely on how quickly (i.e how many turns) you take to complete the mission and completely encourages Scout-rushing instead of actually utilizing your squad properly.

No, but a couple scouts and shocktroopers will try to get at you. Just stick a couple of your own shocktroopers facing the ramp the imps have to come down, have them crouched, and they'll take care of them with interception fire. Then you can spend the rest of the time using lancers/Edelweiss to knock down the walls and shoot the Batomys' turrets.

I found the core gameplay fairly fun, if flawed in some respects (why the fuck can enemies fire at me when it's not their turn?), but the SHEER AMOUNT OF BULLSHIT inbetween the actual missions completely killed it for me. I can deal with a bit of anime drama, but a fuckton of incredibly slow and predictable anime drama combined with some of the VERY WORST U.I. I've ever seen, where you could easily spend upwards of twenty minutes just watching a cutscene, navigating several menus, watching a cutscene, navigating several menus, watching another cutscene... before you even finally got to the actual mission was just too tedious.
Fun little concept, but not fun enough to justify the story and U.I. related bullshit.
I bought and tried to play it after I read a thread about it.
It's kind of slow. A little boring. The storyline is not so good but the absolute worst has to be the characters. Holy shit how can anyone stand this anime fucking bullshit. It's incredible I just want to throw my monitor out the window everytime I have a new cutscene available.

I got bored with it, quite frankly, but I can't deny that it's got nice presentation and provides a decent experience. If you're new to SRPGs or just really like SRPGs, you can't go wrong with at least the first game. I imagine most would like it, at least at first.
Apart from Alicia being game-breakingly OP later on, it's a phenomenal game. Prepare your anus for THAT difficulty spike.

While I have not played the first, I have played 2 and 3. I feel 2 gets some undeserved hate. Aside from the textures and models being shit, even by PSP standards, it's still a solid game.
The story, while not worthy of an academy award, was still pretty decent. And those complaining about "muh high school shenaningans", shit gets pretty real in August with the attack on the school festival andthe game's resident titty monster dying..... again.
The characters, while they are cliche, are decently developed (most of them anyway).
And the gameplay is fairly solid, even with the smaller maps. The smaller maps do give a bit more balance since your shocktroopers can get around more easily (though perhaps too easily once you get access to the more advance classes in the shocktrooper tree), as well as your lancers. The melee guys are also pretty cool and bring something new to the series. The new subclass is also pretty cool and bring some interesting new classes. Don't tell me that it wasn't fucking cool walking up on a gook and smacking him with a sword; or having a giggle when you walk up to a tank and destroy it with a single maul swing.
The only real downside in 2 is the fact that the credit system is completely luck-based. The ones that will give you a fuck ton of trouble are the certificates and diplomas on non-story missions.
