Is the original DS any good?
I found it on Gamestop for $10 refurbished and I'm tempted to get one because I remember the build quality being durable as fuck, but I also recall the system not having a backlight, but rather a frontlight, and I definitely remember the GBA SP's screen looking muted in a way.

Just get a 3ds, they're pretty cheap and at least mine has lasted since launch without any major problems. They can do pretty much everything a DS could plus much more.

Except GBA games

except you hacking a 3DS is as easy as it is free, and once that's done you can play literally every GBA game for free.

Both GBA injects and the homebrew GBA emu are buggy as hell.
The original DS is one of the best consoles ever and is only rivalled by the PS2 in terms of sheer quantity of good titles
As for refurbished consoles though, I have always found they broke super quickly. I guess at that price it's ok.

really? I have had zero issues with injections, including rom hacks and other unofficial stuff like that.

Just because I have the money for it doesn't mean I want to instantly spend it

with nds flash cart, yes.
SOME games work with dsi injection but most do not.
