The Master of Orion reboot got an update. Anybody playing it? The only time /v/ cared about it was when people lusted over the cat girl, but now we have the bug queen. We also have the evil humans and robots now.
>>
This is why I never post on /v/. The board is fast and nobody ever cares about the games I post about.

Anyway, they missed an opportunity with the robot advisor. Should have been a cute robot girl, but it's some stupid floating ball.

Ive seen some videos of it. I have to say all these 4x games look and play the same. You can list them all and they are all just the same shit. I got burnt out on the genre when i realized none of the were going to do anything meaningfully different.
>>
>>332032169

I see a "custom race" option down there. How does that work?

If it's like every other space 4x, you pick a faction to look like and then assign it traits and stats.

So basically you could be the bug people, but have them play exactly like the bear people.
>>
>>332034091

Oh.

That doesn't sound as neat as what I pictured in my head.

Eh, Stardock's efforts prior to GalCiv III were generally fresh enough to rekindle my interest (barring Elemental's initial release) Elemental and its brood had engaging city building mechanics, and GalCiv II had phenomenal AI.
>>
>>332034763
Stardock historically has been my favorite. In fact GalCiv2 is my favortie 4x of all times. But I feel like since that era nothing has changed and these games are all banking on the fact that you enjoyed their predecessors 10 years ago.

shame about galactic civilization 3

Pretty much. Civ finally got around to doing some interesting stuff with BNW and BE, but never wholeheartedly or extensively enough to really matter. Disappointed they eschewed bringing back corporations. 4X never does enough as far as economic subjugation is concerned.
>>
>>332032169

4x is kindof a strange genre these days, especially space 4x. It seems like for a long time nobody was making any of these games, and so you had to either play gal civ, endless space, sword of the stars, or a much older game. And they are all essentially the same goddamned game.

But recently there have been a ton of indie games tweaking the design parameters. They incorporate a neat twist into the mechanics to see if it will work well. Unfortunately, since these are tiny indie studios, the games come out unbalanced and unpolished. Stardrive comes to mind as one of the more successful of this type of game. I recently was excited about Predestination, where planet colonization plays a role, but everything just looks like it was made in flash, and I can't play it.

I am excited for endless space 2 however. Those guys at least know how to make a standard 4x look good.

The combustible limit is gone so you can go anywhere, the limitant is now the starlanes which limit you where you can go, sometimes trapping you in some corner of the galaxy.
You can build defenses on starlanes, combat is real time and the only thing I can do is holding back the weaker vessels a bit so the bigger ones can tank, otherwise they will kamikase and blow up in seconds.
There are no commanders or whatever they were called. The ship customization and most game mechanics are basically the same. I thought they added colors but the options look super similar. They are using only MOO1 races so far.

I wonder if they added espionage already. I haven't played the latest version yet

I was continuing my cataloging of Mrrshan endings but the game glitched out with the technological victory they just added. I "won". The narrator spoke the new line for the ending, but the victory screen shows the humans winning so I was unable to take a screenshot.

I'm hoping they eventually add more to the endings, but I think this is pretty par for the course when it comes to these games.

It's extremely early access. Missing things like leaders, freighters, traits, and the combat is a clusterfuck with no fine control. The tech tree is civ-like with only a few A and B choices to make. The diplomacy is not really there either.

Started a game of it earlier but it still doesn't feel worth playing. I kept thinking about how much I'd rather play Endless Space or SotS1 instead. I get the feeling that they blew all their money on voice actors instead of nerds who can make a good videogame.

I do hope it'll git gud though, since MoO1 and 2 lasted me a good long while. Been a long-ass time since I played either of them so I'm considering firing them up again to see how well they really stack against ES/SotS.

Fingers crossed for Stellaris though. Going to preorder that shit and hope for the best much like MoO.

I won't buy a Stardock product until they release a sequel to Sins of a Solar Empire.

GalCiv3 would have been worth getting if they didn't try to reinvent the wheel with it and just built on what 2 already offered.
>>
>>332043559
SotS is my all time favourite. Stellaris looks like it's borrowing some stuff from it which is good. Like the random encounters/events and pseudo-random techtree.
>>
who /aurora/ here though
>>
>>332041778

So it's shit.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know
>>
>>332043301

Eh. I can kind of understand why it doesn't. I haven't been following it super heavily, but I get the impression it's more abstracted than Distant Worlds and more "Big picture" even though Distant Worlds can have far larger space empires romping around.

My main concerns with Stellaris are if it has enough fluff/flavor/personality to drive the game. Apart from Crusader Kings, I always kinda feel like that's a weak point for Paradox's strategy games. EU4's an enjoyable map painter but you don't get as much dynamic story out of it, and you'll arguably lose even that with Stellaris because you won't have history providing you a framework for "Yeah France conquered Italy that's cool!". "Mammal - Medium - 6 conquered and enslaved Mushroom - Large - 3" doesn't have the same ring to it.

>>332043559

Endless Space is a bit boring gameplay-wise. They've got some really enjoyable fluff (Especially how it ties in to all their games) but it doesn't really impact the gameplay as much as it should. The main thing I enjoy about playing ES is it's about the most relaxing game ever. Great UI sounds, great UI look, awesome laid back music that changes depending on what screen you're on. The gameplay is just alright (Endless Legend is a lot better, hoping ES2 is a similar upgrade) but the experience of playing it is really nice. It's also why I only play it once in a blue moon though.

And yeah, it's a shame SotS2 shit the bed so hard. They had some cool ideas in it but even after their attempts to patch it mechanically it's still clunky and janky compared to SotS1

Will we ever come back to the promised general?
>>
>>332043878
Yeah keeping a close eye on it.
Hopefully there are extensive customization options.

Sots 2 was very lacking in that regard, couldn't fiddle with map parameters or play scenarios.

The mission system became a mastive clusterfuck once your empire became too large and you had so many ships to manage. At some point it took a minute to process the next turn which was frustrating as all hell.

I enjoyed the combat far more in sots2 though it looked much better visually as well. There were some nice elements with diplomacy and politics. Too bad the AI was too dumb to make use of intelligence and counter intelligence.

Distant worlds had more diplomacy options and much larger scale, was a nice change of pace having everything going on in realtime, but the combat just wasn't anywhere near as satisfying.

Empire management and diplomacy was 100 times better in distant worlds though.

I'd love a more entertaining version of distant world with a more fun randomized research tree with a larger variety of drive tech and weaponry, better visuals and effects, more in depth combat while retaining everything that was so good about it even if the scale had to suffer a fair bit.

I tried stardrive but that just didn't cut it for me, star drive 2 had some interesting mechanics but didn't cut it for me either.

I tried emulating Moo2 on DOSbox to see what all the fuss was about and it was surprisingly entertaining for an ancient relic of the past.

It was the mission system that killed SotS 2 for me. So fucking obtuse compared to the simple control scheme of SotS 1. It didn't even add that much depth, just made everything much more complicated and restricted your options.

I remember asking the lead dev on the forums before they banned me about it. He said that he didn't want to make the same game again and didn't like the early tanker swarm exploration of SotS 1. Such a faggot.
