I don't have the sources but I will say that while they can survive a tanking console, it would be a foolish decision for them to continue developing hardware if they have no reason to believe they can turn it into a profit. Eventually there'll come a point where they give up and put their efforts elsewhere.
Nintendo had many different ventures before they started making video games. It's not weird to imagine them moving into an entirely new market if they could no longer be successful there.

They need to make a more standardized game cube with a launch lineup of a new smash, a new fullfleged mario platformer, and a new zelda. I think they could compete based on the strength of their firstparty titles. The NX will fail just like the wii u because the casual market is dead and the majority of the hard core audience will want third party support and graphical parity.

I doubt they'd sell their IPs. Those are their greatest assets and they can take them along. Hell, they're already laying the foundation for this with things like anime, movies and even the theme park, presumably in case of just this.
