It's a game about time travel. You go back in time and save him afterwards. But because there are multiple endings and you can actually fight the final boss anytime you want (if you're strong enough), it's possible to finish the game without bringing him back.

Because the audience gets attached to the main character. It's an emotional investment or some shit, so they feel cheated if the protagonist just suddenly drops dead and they have to get used to a replacement.

While not a video game, I remember reading a book maybe 10 years ago about an adventure with an MC and his best friend.
I forget most of the details, but about 3/4 of the way through the book the MC is killed after he wins a tournament as the prize was some princess whom already had a lover that got his shit pushed in by the MC and enacted revenge.
Pissed me right off as the book shifted narratives to the best friend and I just had to end the book there. While cool in theory, it fucking sucks to get emotionally attached to a character then have him/her removed, even more so if the story is from the viewpoint of that character.
