The problem isn't that they're sword users, it's that they're sword users who're all bishie-ass anime prettyboys/prettygirls. The only character who makes a melee weapon his primary means of attack and doesn't use a sword is Dedede, and he's not a boring anime bishie either.
There's a world of melee weapons like spears, axes, maces, and even a fuckload of swords other than "generic longsword with shit on it", but the only characters who are somewhat interesting with melee weapons are Dedede (uses a hammer) and Shulk (whose sword is different enough that it's not the same boring shit).

I wouldn't say that all of them are just plain "muh sword anime bishie boy and grils". I'm okay with a bit of variety.
It's just a shame that the sword fighters we do have have barely any differences besides "heavier/lighter slash". At least Corrin is different in the way that he uses these... dragon-like movesI'm actually surprised Ridley fans didn't go apeshit on this ahah. Ike is different in a way too that makes him difer greatly from the rest.

Even Sakurai himself said he thought he was stretching it too far on the FE fan-service and still went for it.
It's not hard to think why people got such a sour taste after that Direct. It's not exactly exciting to have another FE rep as the opening newsflash on the Direct. Even some FE fans are wondering why on Earth the series has this many reps. Corrin himself is really just there to promote the newest game overseas, you can't deny that because it's the truth, blunt and short. By the time Bayonetta probably came along, people were probably still feeling disappointed after that first announcement, ESPECIALLY learning that this was going to be the last Direct and ESPECIALLY because Bayonetta was claimed to be the last newcomer DLC RIGHT after his anouncement before she was announced.
