That's been my thought. Not that I think this thing is real yet, but if the screen only crept around the sticks a bit I'd be fine with that.
I think Nintendo is usually fairly practical in their designs and would recognize screen space under the palms is a waste.

The biggest reason I think these photos aren't real is the fact that it looks IDENTICAL to the patent application. I don't know why everyone latched onto that, because the ilustrations in those are always intentionally vague and just use simple shapes.

I'll be positive a little here. The resolution looks pretty good especially for such an odd shape. I'm not sure it's such a smart idea to waste that much screen space. Will anyone ever see the little bits their palms cover on the outer edges by the sticks? No. Never.
The biggest problem is touch screens are absolute ass for gaming. Second biggest issue is I play consoles so I don't have to look down at my hands. Even if this is a handheld kind of thing, it has the touch screen problem.
But ok. Let's say there are somehow buttons in or under that screen that you can't really see but you can feel. Highly unlikely but let's pretend. How would the screen not get damaged over time? You don't go mashing a screen like that.
I just don't see a scenario where this thing isn't a major turn off. I get what the concept is. Kids are on their phones constantly! We need to tap into all that time spent! But that didn't goddamn work with the Wii U. And that idea didn't stop Sony from selling 40 million PS4s and counting.
Nintendo is now going into it's third generation of not understanding the market. Everyone knows the Wii's success was a fluke or at best not something Nintendo expected. And core gamers have suffered ever since.
