Yes, the mechanics aren't quite as dated as the first Persona. But the encounter rate and be annoying high. The cast is great and the story is fairly solid, Its my personal favourite too.

It really only has story going for it, because the gameplay is just plain bad and the music for the most part is unremarkable.
If someone's never played a game in the series, it's nice to get into something that's closer to other RPGs to introduce them to concepts and general feeling of the series.

The first game in the duology almost plays itself, due to the handout Personas being good enough to carry you the whole game, so in a way it's more similar to later Persona games, both games are still very good though.
