I think what bothers me about the storytelling in this game is that nothing can ever really change since it's an MMO.
We fight and kill Gaius and all that shit goes down, but the empire's bases are always gonna be there. No matter how many times we fight the beast tribes they'll always be right outside of town, or summoning a primal again or whatever.
Makes it feel like you're really never accomplishing anything significant.

More challenging than WoW, at least. Moreso than most MMOs. Combat seems slow but becomes about as rapid as any other once you start getting your off-GCD abilities. Love the art style and music. Story's great.
Basically the best MMO on the market with the best and arguably hardest raids with the best mechanics. Honestly nothing else currently comes close. I'll give Legion a try when it comes out, but WoD has been a snorefest.

I just got out of one, I was healing and the bard who died 2-3 times on each boss was constantly standing in AOE and refused to kill any of the stardust adds which resulted in him dying. Any mmo would be a good first mmo. Some things to consider though if you do decide to pick up xiv is that it has a few major difference from most other popular mmos, characters can change classes at any time and you'll have to level more than one class to get all your skills and unlock jobs, which means that the game is built on you playing only 1 character.
The game is very solo friendly though, it has an entire story which is mostly single player where you have to occasionally do dungeons and you'll have to get through the entire original main story to even get into the newest expansion.
Although once you've done the main story leveling additional classes is pretty much a pain since it involves just spamming dungeons by the time you're to your 5-6th job you'll probably be pretty sick of it.

Arguably in leveling content you could run the risk of letting others die you're inexperienced. By the time you hit level cap and start doing that content, it'll be so braindead and you'll be so overgeared that you can pop a regen and then just start DPSing and it'll be fine.

Yes.
Healing is easy, so the only way to polish your skills is to DPS while healing. At 60 if you're not putting out at least 800 DPS in farm dungeons then you're a shitter, and yes this unfortunately means it's mandatory to meld accuracy to your gear.

This is actually how it's supposed to be. Unless you're in a progression raiding group, your DPS output is purely bonus. The main reason that you're expected to DPS is that healing is generally so easy that you'll end up just doing nothing a lot of the time, and you might as well use that time to DPS. You should never overextend if you feel that shit might go down, though. As you get more experienced, you'll end up realizing that you don't actually have to be at the ready most of the time and DPSing will become more natural and feel less risky. Also, even the most saintly healer will eventually lose patience with shit duty finder DPS.

I think it's a really good game. However, as baby's first? That's probably debateable.
The main story is comprised of well over 100 quests and its required to do if you want to unlock a very strong amount of the content in the game(to throw out a percentage, I'd say roughly 70-80% of the game is locked behind the main story).
Since it's required to beat to unlock most of the content in the game you'll either love it for its length and how it eases you in or you'll find it boring and overwhelming and lose interest pretty quickly.

Summoner was fucked by the lore and technical limits of the PS3, more than it was by gameplay.
Most entities within the FF series already exist in the game as either a beast race, enemy phylum (eg. Voidsent like succubi and Bombs) or as a primal. Egis were a thing before Summoners in this game, so after taking away what's already been used "primal egis" were all that was left for people to Summon. That these egis don't look more like their original primals is just PS3 limitations at work; the only thing you can really blame SE for is being lazy when it comes to making new Egis. But that represents a huge amount of design and gameplay balance work so I can see why they haven't gone that way yet.
Let's see what happens in 4.0 when they finally drop the PS3.

No matter how much they keep fucking up WoW, the actual core is absolutely rock solid, it has the best camera, movement and general feel out of its genre and nothing else even comes close, added to that the world is really cool to explore especially for the first time and everything is fleshed out to the point you can have 100% suspension of disbelief.

Are PvP glamours still a thing by the way? I recall Warriors used to glamour robes over their armour so people would think they were mages and vice versa. Dated gear from 1.0 was worth a ton of money as a result. My character is already a highlander, aiding the effect; just wondering if that stuff still psyches people out or if they aren't fooled so easily now.
