To start out, I am very new to the 4chan community, as it is very difficult for me to get over the initial trouble of learning the UI. However I love the idea of it and want to invest more time to it.

But I was curious, because I have never really been apart of a Last Of Us community. And I generally just keep my thoughts of it to myself. Were other people as greatly affected by this masterpiece of a game as I was?

The Last Of Us initiated a real turning point in my life. It helped me find my passion for video creation, cinema and just media in general. It was the first game I ever played that ended up being more than just a shoot-'em-up for me. Up until then, I played games like COD and whatnot because it was the fun and cool thing to do. I saw TLOU for sale on G2A and thought it looked like a neat zombie game. I had heard a little bit about it when it was remastered. I bought it because why not. So I went into it thinking t would just be another fun shoot-'em-up. And oh man was I wrong..

You have to understand, I've never cried during anything, a movie, book or game. Fictitious stories don't make me cry. They just don't. 20 minutes into this game and I was balling. I was hooked. And it truly changed me. The story, the art style, the voice acting, the animation, the music, the script. It was all inconceivably well done. It opened my eyes the to art that single player games are supposed to be. And it did the same for movies and books.

Really it all comes down to appreciation. I've learned to appreciate things that I may personally find unenjoyable. It definitely matured me in a way. Those are just my thoughts confined into a few paragraphs..

Was it the same way for anybody else? Did it change you? And in what way?

TLOU killed linear games for me. If you deviate from the game's script even the slightest bit things bug out, like in that section where you're escorting that black guy and his kid. When all the zombies start chasing you through all those closed doors. I figured shit, why not just throw a molotov down in the doorway and let them light themselves up? If you do that they just become invincible, webm related.

You're barely even playing the game, you're just an actor following Naughty Dog's script.
>>
>>331743049
I would estimate you have to move 5 ladders max throughout the whole game

Holy shit this is disgusting. I guess it truly is an interactive movie. I also hate the fact that enemies movements are scripted until something happens. Everytime you restart the level the things are going to happen exactly the same way unless you do something anormal (throwing bottles or get spotted). So instead of having multiple ways to pass through multiple enemies you either have to follow a certain path at very precise moments or you have to shoot every single enemy which is awful because they have a shit IA.
>>
>>331743296
There's more, like when you, Ellie and the fat guy are escaping the school. The guy's got a shotgun so I figured I'd let him kill the zombies while I focus on preserving my valuable health bars but he just stands there and watches.

The game wants to be a movie so bad but it's got all these videogame issues that clash with the script if you don't do what you're told to. (forgive the shitty webm I can't into encoding)

TLOU set the bar for storytelling in games. I feel lucky to be able to have played it when it was released.

Unfortunately it probably won't be topped for a very long time.
>>
>>331743693
Another issue I had with it was how the game world doesn't react to not-ellen-page's presence until she actively initiates and encounter. She's practically invisible, which begs the question of what she's even there for.
>>
>>331742136

Yeah it was amazing it's one of my favourite games. I've never felt as attached to fictional characters as I was in The Last of Us. Gameplay is super fun too.

It happens so that the entire game isn't you telling Ellie where to go. The game would just be fucking annoying if you had to direct her.
>>
>>331744082

You could argue that Naughty Dog were too lazy, incompetent or both to work out a system where the game world would react to her presence.

>>
>>331744712
I played it through once and enjoyed it.

So are you saying you relied on her fighting? That is was at all necessary in any regard? I don't see what your post has to do with my post, I'm saying 'her presence was not necessary', not 'she doesn't fight'.
>>
>>331744827
So you're suggesting they completely change her personality and have her be passive and hide during fights ?
>>
>>331744793

>full of stupid plotholes

This is the first I'm hearing of any plotholes. What are they?
>>
>>331744881
That wouldn't be a change of her personality, she gets scared constantly during the game, and she ostensibly has more than one side to her personality anyway. Name something positive about her being present during fights.
>>
>>331745004
>Name something positive about her being present during fights.
She keeps me from getting too immersed
>>
TLOU showed me what gaming could be. I no longer consider "go save the princess" and gameplay to be compelling reasons to engage in video games anymore.
>>
>>331744881
They could've had her hide BEFORE fights. They could've had her leave cover only when the player alerts an enemy, or when she can stealth kill an enemy without entering another's visual/auditory range.
Making her invisible to enemies is just a really goddamned lazy way of programming around their inability to fix the pathfinding in their game.

And that's another issue: Every encounter is very obviously meant to be approached in a specific way. The AI isn't adaptive at all and it just fucking breaks if the player approaches a fight the "wrong" way.
>>
Shit movie game by shit developers who ride off the name of a successful team to make money
>>
>Were other people as greatly affected by this masterpiece of a game as I was?

Stopped reading there, OP. TLOU is grossly overrated. No where near being a "masterpiece." I had to stop shortly after the first time jump because it was so boring and I was let down by the hype surrounding it.
>>
>>331745817
I think it was to prevent nigh instant gameovers from enemies focusing her and gibbing her with 2-3 shots. Lesser of two evils.

Most people are so busy fighting that they don't dick around and notice the quirks.

I'd rather have psuedo intangible Ellie than 'you lose' escort-mission Ellie making me fail every five fucking minutes.

To be fair, there's two and a half ways to approach encounters, depending on the encounter flag.

If it's 'get to this spot and hit Triangle', you can fight through, stealth through or just run balls out and it still triggers.

If it's 'you must kill all the enemies to progress', then yeah, you have to either shoot then or stealth kill them all. There's actually a few different lines of dialogue that happen when you kill your way through a scene and don't have to, but it's mostly pointless chatter.

It's easy to be 'tricked' by TLOU if you don't play a lot of games or if you get immersed and run with it your first time through. If you're a very technical gamer/speed runner though and you peel back the visuals to start fucking with mechanics and how things actually interact, it's a fucking shit show.

It's moronic. There's not always a hiding place, and on Normal/Easy (aka target audience difficulties), she actually knifes a fair number of guys to death or peels them off Joel.

They were appealing to liberal culture shit too. She's a strong lesbian protag thaf holds her own as well as Joel. Running and hiding would earn them the ire of the 'damsel in distress' argument (I'd say she still is but they threw a nice rug over it to hide it a bit)

No. Ellie can literally be whistling, shouting, knocking over chairs and dumb moveable objects to raise a rucks right beside a clicker and nothing happens.

Joel pushes too hard on the left stick half a screen away and you get SCREEEEECH/‘He's over there! *bang bang bang*‘
>>
>>331746669
>There's not always a hiding place

So make one.

>She knifes a fair number of guys

So make them easier some other way. Put less bad guys there in easy mode. Make them clumsy. You think for some reason that i'm suggesting these changes should have been implemented in the finished game instead of y'know, when the game was being developed

>Pandering

Joel literally looks after her the entire way through, it's about their relationship, not Ellie as strong independant woman. Even so, it's a poor reason to have her running about breaking immersion in game. If they had made it work it would have been great obviously, but they couldn't and so it shouldn't have been there.

maybe on the lower difficulties. I just finished Survivor a week or so ago and in the hotel Ellie knocked over a plastic water jug and forced me to "go loud" since I had enemies flying out of closets to shoot me with unobtainium bullets. It seems like all of these webm's are from normal or easy and of course its simple to pick apart. Don't know about hard since I skipped it for Survivor but that shit flat out won't work since you die so fast and emeies can hear and see a whole lot better. Survivor should probably be the default but that would make people rage quit so they make normal and easy exist.

Honestly, I know a lot of normies who love TLoU because they're so casual they never ever play games and explore beyond what the game tells you to do. If you let TLoU hold your hand and obey the spoonfed prompts, you will be rewarded by the game basically acting like you're hot shit and so good at video games. They stapled a near HBO quality story onto it for a vidya as well, so it's the perfect storm for normie-praise.

Can we finally stop the "Last of Us was good" meme? It was just a filler title for Naughty Dog to work on their uncharted engine.

Only normie blogs paid by Sony and poor Sonyfriends who were stuck with a PS3 last Gen claim it to be a masterpiece.

The same people who claim garbage like Flower and Journey to be the pinnacles of vidya.

Just stop.

I regret to inform you that these people are serious. Might as well give up now.
>>
>>331743769
This is my primary issue with the game. It's a video game, but it doesn't want to be. It wants to be a vaguely interactive movie, and as soon as you deviate from the script even a little bit, it turns into just another video game, with all the same kind of issues video games tend to have regarding scripted sequences. Everything is put on hold until you get back on rails.

I get the feeling that the kind of people who hail it as some kind of narrative masterpiece don't play many video games (or read much, or watch any film that isn't an action movie), and thus never bothered to play the game like it's actually a video game.
>>
>>331742136

>>331747782
It IS fun, and a good game despite the criticism, it's just a 7 or 7.5 instead of the overhyped 10/10 masterpiece shit.

It's a fun zombie/post apocalypse romp with stealth aspects. You can beat the shit out of guys with 2x4s and pummel rabid hobos with your fists. It has a lot of problems but it's a solid game, just to reiterate what other people are saying: it isn't a fucking GoAT masterpiece, nor was it worthy of the 8 million awards it got.

I'd argue that the most frustrating part about the entire game is that shooting dudes and zombies is fairly enjoyable, but the amount of ammo you can hold is arbitrarily small and it's also arbitrarily limited in the game world. It's not uncommon to kill multiple people who have their guns out, only to find that none of them have any ammunition - even members of the military.

I'm kind of under the impression that it's like Resident Evil 4, or Dead Space; where enemies tend to drop what you "need." So if you go around strangling people and bashing guys with lead pipes, the only ammo you'll find is stuff scripted in drawers and shit, since you don't "need" it because of your playstyle - which is just a result of the scarcity of ammo in the first place.

This is the kinda shit I'm talking about. You can carry a bunch of molotovs, medpacks, all these supplies, even these horrifying tincan-bombs with scissors, knives, and nails sticking out of them, but you can't manage to hold more than a couple mags for a pistol, or a dozen rounds for your bolt action. It's arbitrary as hell and it does nothing but punish the hoarding player - ie the kind of person you're supposed to be in a "SUPPLIES ARE SCARCE" situation. They're scarce, but not scarce enough to warrant sticking some rounds in your back pocket.

It just feels like the game wants you to have a very specific amount of supplies and equipment at all times, and if you try to actually keep yourself stocked up, it punishes you for it. I now gotta go out of my way to kill these shitty bandits with my rifle just to justify picking up this ammo.

>Most chads do not want to play as a 12 year old weaponless loli, but considering Joel is on the cover and in the trailers, I don't think anyone was tricked.
This is completely irrelevant to my post.

How is it brave? It's a 5 minute introductory sequence where a character is introduced (and then killed off 10 minutes later purely as character development for the MC). You're not even controlling her when she's killed - not that it would matter either way, since it's done in a cutscene, completely removing any involvement and agency the player has in the event.

The Last of Us isn't even a good movie, let alone a good game.
>>
>>331743693

Not true. The AI is some BS. In the winter section when you have to stealth past some of David's squad through some wrecked buildings, the squad leader would ALWAYS send people toward my direction no matter which way I went or how many times I restarted.
>>
>>331750212
This is very true, Last of Us multiplayer is fucking great. I'd love some bigger maps and more time per round
>>
>>331751020

Imo, the size of the map is perfect for what Factions wants to do. It wouldn't be nearly as tense and considering how slow-paced the game mode is by default, you need smaller maps to force confrontations. Being a sniper is hardly viable as it is, and larger maps would just make them completely useless.

I agree that we should be given more time though, like at least 20 minutes. Pulling a complete turn-around when you're on the losing team only to be beat by the timer is so fucking frustrating.
