I think it has to do with the lack of confidence in them as a console manufacturer. Wii U isn't exactly helping their reputation. They might have looked at projections and thought that 20 million or so Wii Us sold would be a Pyrrhic victory.
I used to think that it would be better for them to eat the costs as this recent move would seem like betrayal to early adopters, but the press regarding this console has been so negative as of late that it may be better for them to simply axe it.
Don't get me wrong, I like my Wii U, and I wish more games would get released for it. But continued support might do them more harm them good. I could be wrong though, maybe this is in fact a bad move on Nintendo's part. Time will tell.

Nintendo's first party is fine. The issue is it's ALL they have and that's not nearly good enough. If it's all they have, they'd need at least 3x as many 1st party games releasing PER YEAR to be truly worth it.
see ps4 and even Xbox (though all its exclusives are coming to PC) can take time on their 1st party releases because they essentially have the entire AAA industry to work with. 3rd parties are what keep a system afloat.
What also would help is having an online network on par with AT LEAST the ps3's. This includes supporting online play fully. Yes, you can play with friends in mario kart, but we still can't co-op mario party or nsmb? Squid kids is a fun game, but you can't even talk to your team because Nintendo feels the need to nanny everyone, even if they are adults. It's retarded.

I personally want them to make the NX huge and a huge success. Since I already have my Wii U and love it a lot, the Wii U of the Wii U being discontinued at the launch of the NX doesn't really bother me one bit personally. If the resources could be put towards the NX alone that would be great.
That said it appears to annoy a lot of other people which I can understand. And it may actually hurt Nintendo depending on things. And personally I am still somewhat concerned about spare parts. If an unfortunate accident were to happen in the future like me breaking my gamepad somehow or something. Will I even be able to get a new one?
At the very least I got the PSTV before it was discontinued. I still have no idea of whether or not I should update it though. I hope Sony don't take down the official updates for it.
