Revelation is worse than RE6 and less scary than RE1 on PSX.
Resident Evil 1 and RE4 are where I started (actually with 4, and moved on to the other games).
RE4 is just an all-around great game, and if you can get used to RE1's controls (which are so blown out of proportion; most of the whiners are just that - whiners) the game is a blast, remake or not. Though I guess I'd recommend REmake first.
I enjoy all of the main RE games up to 4 (haven't played any after that), personally.

If you like the Mercs modes you may like Rev2's Raid mode but don't touch them otherwise. They're exceptionally boring and awful for RE games.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Rev2 is way more of a valid sequel to the series than RE6 was. Things actually happen in it that are relevant to the story of the franchise.
Mechanically it's a collection of all the horrible "innovations" they've done over the ages but done properly this time. It's got co-op focus like RE5, but one player is designated as a carry and the other as a near helpless support, making it actually okay to play alone. It's got the same type of inventory as RE0, except not shit this time. Fighting is RE4 but with addition of strafing while aiming, and the overpowered melee is split between two characters so that you can't just casually headstomp everyone. There's an actual puzzle or two even. This is the most RE-like RE since 4, and for my money by far better than 5 or 6.
No comment on Rev1 since I haven't played it.
