I played DeS in spirit form for most of the game because a buddy told me you do more damage at the cost of health. I would just go to the nexus and drop to my death. I don't remember if there actually was a damage bonus but I regret it anyway because I never got invaded so I feel like I missed out.

If this is true it might actually give a boost to the invasion scene. In Dark Souls 1 there wasn't much of a reason to go human besides kindling and summons. Hopefully embers are pretty common

Actually soul form DOES do more damage, but I think you need pure black or pure white character tendency for the biggest boost (20% I believe). So you'll be weaker in human form that way, but more HP.
Pure black also gives you the same damage boost when invading as a black spirit, and pure white gives the boost while summoned as a blue spirit.

The Souls series getting popular lead to these sad little babies becoming a majority. Back in Demon's Souls days nobody complained about invaders (unless they had scraping spear), they just dealt with it. It made the game more exciting, more dynamic, forced you to approach enemies in a completely different way, and to always stay on your toes.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is that if you don't like invasions you're a fucking casual.
