Its the middle man of ARPG. Diablo is quick, simple and fluid, PoE is complex and autistic while Grim Dawn fits in between them. Has an actual ending.

Devotions, flash bangs and pick up another class for defense.
Arcanist is nice for Sphere of Protection and flash freeze which also reduces enemy fire resistance.

Devotions, you could also pick a secondary profession for the Defensive skills alone like Arcanist which is super good with Demo since the weapon buff boosts your elemental damage.

I like the Saboteur myself (Demo+Nightblade), it's a guy that attacks super fast with dual wielding, teleports behind you and makes everything explode.

Shaman as a base class for a melee character is really fun too.

If you want 2H lightning then shaman/arcanist and go primal strike
If you want to go physical or physical+bleed then shaman/soldier and use savagery as main attack and blade arc with the cooldown transmuter as your AoE.
If you want to go bleed melee then go shaman/nightblade, debuff stuff with devouring swarm+rend and then smack stuff dual wielding some of the great bleed focused legendaries, enjoy seeing 100k damage bleed DoT ticks.

It's good, the problem is that Titan Quest did everything Grim Dawn does some years ago, so if you played TQ a lot, GD won't be as refreshing as it could be, and in fact it could even be a disappointment because the same flaws of TQ are still on GM.

Greatness. I'm 370 hours in and didn't reach ultimate yet. I'm only playing hardcore so that explains this. I'm going softcore for the first time and still enjoying it. Every build feels different combat wise even if it's down to 1 or 2 active skills. But itemization in this game is the best. You can even build around one weapon or one set and add active or passive with components. The grinding doesn't feel tedious and it's always fun to bash enemies and see them fly around dismembermed.

I'm a sucker for ranged weapons and I settled for PS rifle/crossbow after my dual pistol sorc died and it's a lot stronger thanks to how easier it is to kite mobs between each shot instead of having to stop to fire a quick salvo.

I got a pretty fun build going on using Shaman/Occultist. I've basically transformed into zeus god of thunder using a 2h range lightning build while buffing it with curses from occultist.
