The Ruins are so different in tone from the rest of the game it's not even funny. Plenty of people that enjoyed the demo did not enjoy the final product as a result.

I liked it then, and I like it now.
That said, I generally avoid talking about it now, primarily because the fanbase at large is fucking awful and because its short, and beyond some of the datamining secret-y shit, there really isn't anything to talk about unless you wanna just circlejerk over the characters, which I don't.
The game absolutely does not deserve the ridiculously massive amount of praise it gets, but I also don't think it deserves to be reviled as it on /v/.

Alphys could have been written to be a male character and it would have been exponentially better with the only needed change being a few replacements of "her" to "him" and removing the dress sprite. Other than that, nearly everyone thought Alphys was male when they first saw that character.
