Try playing it or watching gameplay. Cages appear once you go past certain areas with no indication. Without a guide or extreme patience it's just frustrating to properly complete.

there's a sound when a cage appear, I never beat this game as a kid but I did a few years ago on psp and I didnt use a guide at all.

Rayman 2, Origins and Rayman 3 are the go to games for series.
Rayman 1 is okay while Legends is good until you find out all the "extra" content is slightly revamp origins levels.

I played through the game six times thinking it might have been a bug or if I got to The Bayou quicker the Lum wouldn't get eaten. Eventually I just gave up and haven't tried to get 100% completion in any game since.

Play Rayman Forever (the Designer levels are the best ones IMO), Rayman 2, Rayman 3, Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends.
I think there's a 2d Rayman 2 or Rayman 3 on portable console but I've never played it so I have no idea whether it's good or not.

I don't agree. The cages only require you to explore the level, with the exception of one cage which is insanely hard to find - and even then only on the PC version since the cages are not in the same places on the PC version. The sound makes it obvious when you've made one appear, and as far as I can remember they never spawn far from where you were when the sound played.
