The fact that your brain activates in the same, or very similar, way when you watch someone pick up a mug does not matter when you are watching someone playing video games for many reasons, one being the basically infinite amount of options at any given time during a gameplay, the other being the necessary emotional investment most video games, if not all, require.
The article is trying to cover this with 'sympathy' but that matters little, or rather, not at all. Everyone's decision at any given point of time are completely unique. The fact that the streamer jumps over an obstacle where you would do the same does not mean you are brain twins connected by love and brofist through time and space.
I remember watching SH2, Demon Souls, and Bloodborn walkthroughs (the only ones I've ever seen) and I know that I could never, even in cases where the players did something that I would do as well, possibly in the very same manner, feel the same way I would if it was me playing the games.
The only plausible chance of the article being actually right is that let's players are affecting their audience to such an extent where the audience takes over the streamer's personality, or at least parts of it, thus rendering their 'uniqueness' as a human being completely invalid.
The other reason for why people enjoy watching streamers play is the removal of need to do absolutely anything. They are moving from an interactive medium, video games, back to the goo' ole days of television, a medium where no input is necessary and all that it requires of you is not falling asleep. Television is the worst entertainment medium and leisure activity ever, dumbed down for the masses, where you only perceive, take in everything and don't even think about it, due to your brain regressing to a 'save energy' mode.
