It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination but it really doesn't excel anywhere either, the main reason it became so popular was because it was the first big series to do what it did back in the early NES days and now it's popular purely because it's such a long running franchise.
Individually the games are okay, gameplay is simple but has it's drawbacks, story is mediocre, graphics are nothing special. It treads the line of average but hey, Zelda was the first one there and is attached to a beloved corporation so everyone loves it.
