A really good example of this are adventure games like Prince of Persia, you get your weapons and health upgrades by exploring the area and solving challenges, not by grinding braindead mobs.

Well you can consider the Skulls from the Halo series to be self imposed challenges. Yeah some give achievements for completing the game with them enabled but not all of them do.
Also I think franchise loyalty is the most autistic thing about video games.
